So, I joined the local marine wildlife protection group online, and they have an automated "Send a message to your local MP". My local MP is Julie Bishop. Writing to her about protecting our waters is like asking a shark to protect the local seal population from devastation.
It's like asking McDonalds to caretake a "Let's Eat Healthy!" campaign.
It's like asking Darth Vader to look after the local Rebel Base. You catch my drift.
But I wrote a letter anyway. It's not abusive or anything, but I think it's fairly pointed. Will she listen? I doubt it. But it's worth a shot. Maybe if I annoy her enough, she'll do something. I mean, I can write to other members I *know* will make an attempt to do something, but it doesn't hurt to poke the shark every now and again, right?
Dear Julie Bishop,
You have long been the member for Curtin, and as such, you represent the interests of this constituency. The area you caretake is an area rich with natural treasures.
I consider myself blessed to live in the western suburbs. At night, I can hear the sea beating on the shore. I often go snorkeling, just to be amongst the beautiful wildlife that has survived here for millions of years.
Unfortunately, some of us do not treasure this natural bounty, and abuse our oceans for either their own gain or their own entertainment. Too many times our coastal regions have been under threat by either development or polution. The western coastal region hosts a more diverse ecosystem than even the Great Barrier Reef. You are amongst those that can protect this stunning, precious natural habitat.
I know Tony Abbott does not consider marine sanctuaries to be very important. This election has shown both major parties that people *do* care about the environment. The only reason Labor did not win by a landslide is because of the huge shift to the Greens. People have told Parliament what they want - they want a greener government.
Marine Wildlife Sanctuaries may seem like they will disadvantage fishermen and outdoors-folk, but what they don't understand is that without these vital sanctuaries, marine wildlife has nowhere to be safe and to repopulate. We can't go on eating up everything in the ocean forever. We must take care of the oceans.
It has been clear to me, watching the run-up to this election, that Marine Sanctuaries are not a priority for a Liberal Government. But they are important, and they will be important whether you want it or not. Ecological diversity is not just a hippie, tree-hugging concern. It is vital to human survival.
I hope that you can show me that the Liberal Party is not ignorant to what is important. Prove to me that your party cares about more than the bottom line for corporations and the upper echelons of society. If you really are the party that will lead Australia with a more stable and effective government, show us that you will do that while protecting our waters from wasteful and careless behaviour and policies. Protect one of our greatest resources.
Regards,
Nancy Lorenz.
