Hi y'all.

Well, I am trying to learn German. Dad's taken to pointing to objects and giving me the German name for them. I know, it's utterly attrocious that a girl as so thoroughly and proudly half-German as I am can't speak the language, but I do know a few words and it seems, as I look through German books (buch.. buchen? what's the plural?) and stuff, that I actually know some of the grammar instinctively. Like, I took this easy German test, and even though I got most of the questions wrong, I actually did a lot of second guessing and my instincts with German are correct (like grammar structure and so forth). So I'm comforted on that count, and I'm thinking maybe it won't be so hard to learn.

I just wish I had some of those really easy kids books, like I had in school when I was learning to read. You know, like the really shit easy books like, "See Dick run. Run Dick, run!" All the way up to, "Sally went to the park and played with the ball." All that shit. Cause then I can learn the way I learnt english, and it'll be easier on me that way. God, I wish I could remember where that old German kids book my Oma and Opa sent me was. :T Stupid me for losing it!! I might pull out an old German fairy story book - I aim to be able to read that fucking thing. I never could as a kid and I want to.

So anyway, wish me luck!! And if any of my German friends want to send me emails in German, you're welcome to. Just know that I know fuck all at the moment, so you have to aim your German levels to someone with the IQ of a potato. (Kartoffel).

Aaah - okay, so umlauts go in and - wow I'm so lost. *whimper* And thanks for the help, I'll probably need it (badly). Especially since Dad hasn't lived in Germany for like, thirty years!! LOL. (He still speaks it fluently, but you know how older people speak different from younger people).

If you're interested, I could maybe send you files of a German audio-book: Ghosts stories, maybe, if you're interested? That should help you get an "ear" for the language.
Und keine Sorge - es ist alles halb so schlimm, wie es scheint.

Can you receive files via AIM?
My virtual harddisc is wonky at the moment, so I can't upload there. Or, I could try yousendit ... That way, they'd store it on their server for a day or two, ad you could download it from there. However, IM'd probably be easiest.

My friend Monique (mum of Maya's friend Teya) is first-generation American; her parents immigrated from Germany in the 1950s. And Teya calls Monique's mum OMA :D But it sounds like you need "German for Dummies" or something like that....*hugs*

Tell me about it. And yeah, I used to call my German grandparents Oma and Opa. Sometimes the grandkids call my Dad 'Opa', which is so very cute. Cati calls Dad 'Opa' in front of Johnny. I think even David (Johnny's brother) calls him Opa. I think. Not sure. Mum is Granny though, since her Mum was called "Granny". I think when I'm old, I want to be called "Nan-nan", until I'm used to being old, and then I'll let them call me Granny. LOL.

(Reminds me that I wanted to re-learn french)

Ohhh, danke! That's all I can say presently, but eventually I'll try to cobble sentences together (when I know enough about the language). I found a rather good site called german for travellers. They have picture games - baby shit but you know what? I knew most of it already! Fuck knows how - people have spoken German fluently around me for years and I've only known one or two words, but for some reason I actually know some German words. Bizarre!! :)

OK this is off topic, but your icon kicks so much ass. I almost fell off my chair. Me and my friends always throw movies lines at each other all the time, and that one gets used alot. Sweet. ^_^

HAhahaha. When I was a little kid, I was *obsessed* with the Superman movies. I had a huuuuuuge crush on Christopher Reeve and Lois Lane was my hero. I will forever *adore* Terrence Stamp, and Lord Zod is the coolest villain ever. Second in running is the wily Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman version of course).

Guten Abend mein Frood.

Prolly shouldn't mix German and Adamsish (Adamsisch?) in the same sentence ;)
I keep meaning to go back to learning German myself, I gave up years back when the grammar started getting way too confusing for me and I really wish I hadn't now... it turned out to be one of the hardest and most pleasurable things I've ever attempted.
But with your heritage and background, you shouldn't even need luck kid ;)

Viel Gluck! <--- pretend that has an umlaut

Best of luck -- German's not too bad grammatically except for all the fecking cases. And the plurals, they suck, too. And the irregular verbs can be a bitch, but at least there aren't too many of them.

Umm, yeah. :) Seriously, have fun!

I need to learn Tamil. The future parents-in-law will be visiting in the now-foreseeable future, and I'd like to be able to say *something* in their languange by then. Can't even read the alphabet. Woe is me. (Or should I say "Weh ist mir"?)

Grusse, <--- should also have an umlaut
