Nah, it's pure selfishness. I don't download stuff that the creator hasn't made available to that method (not judging others; my morals are my morals, they don't apply to anyone but me), which means that I often get to see things well behind other people. Which means I'm always having to watch out for spoilers, so if I ever talk about the content of any media newer than about 30 years or so, I just take a second and mention it might be spoiling for someone. Pure selfishness: be the change you want (about the spoilers, I mean). :)
Damn it, LJ ate my bloody comment. Basically, I was saying "I understand, I myself don't have a problem with snatching Doctor Who off the net because it's played here on a non-commercial station anyway, and I'm a merchandise addict."
If I like something, I make sure I put *some* money towards the franchise. But I'm dirt poor so I can't afford much.
That one I get, for sure. Like I said, different folks get their different moral calculus; different factors get different weights. No criticism from me, promise. :)
*nodnod* I used to not download at all... until there was this episode of Big Bang Theory I knew wouldn't be shown in Aussie for at least 6 months and I really, really wanted to see it. (See, my love for Starbuck/Katee Sackhoff forces me to break the law :P )
Mind you, as soon as box sets of the stuff I have downloaded are available to buy, I'll buy them.
