Goodbye, Leela!
Sep. 12th, 2009 04:29 amIt was very sudden how they were like, "Leela loves Andred!" I mean, I can see why, the motherfucker is hung like a horse and talks like Ace Rimmer. Pity they didn't seem to develop it, even non-romantically. I think those scenes'd be cute. The end could have certainly used them, that arc was full of boring BBC corridor shots.

Date: 2009-09-12 01:51 am (UTC)- the entire season had gone a bit off the rails. One story called "The Vampire Mutations" by Terrance Dicks was nixed at the last minute by BBC management because they thought it would be seen as mocking their very expensive Count Dracula miniseries. Dicks wrote "Horror of Fang Rock" at the last minute to replace it. ("The Vampire Mutations" eventually got recorded three years later, heavily rewritten, as "State of Decay".)
- "Underworld" nearly got cancelled until a production assistant proved they could shoot it quickly and cheaply using blue-screen, which they did.
- The big season finale was to be set on Gallifrey and feature Time Lords versus cat people. When Graham Williams, the producer, finally took a look at the finished scripts he was horrified - they were ridiculously ambitious, and included scenes of giant combat arenas with 10,000 cat person spectators. He killed the script and, without any other resources, sat down with the script editor Anthony Read and wrote a replacement while they shot it. They used the pseudonym Anthony Read on the scripts, because it looked really bad that a producer and script editor were commissioning themselves to write. The week to week writing is what gives "The Invasion of Time" such odd scenes of padding.
- On top of all of that, Louise Jameson announced she wanted to leave. Graham Williams figured she was just after a bit of a pay rise, and kept fobbing her off and assuming she'd sign at the last minute. The last minute came after they'd shot most of "The Invasion of Time", and Jameson had to point out she really did mean it - she'd meant it all year - and so they married her off to Andred at the last minute. Jameson was apparently a bit shitty about this, as she expected (quite rightfully) a more meaningful exit than holding a guy's hand, and she'd always expected Leela would probably have a heroic death scene.

The first scenes with Leela and Andred were pretty cutesy IMO - you can see he likes her from the start, even if he's not quite sure what to make of her. And I can see Leela's relationship with Rodan continuing, too :)
