Of the technical kind!

So, my external harddrive (apparently designed by Porche, like that fucking matters right now) has died. Apparently I left it on all the time and that's a big no-no. *hangs head* My bad!

But I want to rescue the information from that hard-drive and put it on a new one. Can anyone help me figure this out? The LaCie drive that's died has all my old fic on it, all my websites, MY NEW BIRDMARTIAN COMIC and precious family photos that I don't have stored anywhere else.

I don't know WHY it chose now to die on me. It's not like I don't have enough shit on my plate as it is, but eh - I guess I didn't use it correctly! *sigh*

stick it in the freezer for a few hours then try to copy everything as fast as possible.

I've heard of that solution before, too. As a last resort, it's supposedly got a better-than-you'd-expect success rate.

It works in cases where the bearings in the drive have seized. Shrink the bearing slightly and free up the seizure.
It's usually a one shot deal though. I've had it work 2 or 3 times out of the 20 odd I've tried.

No no. It's a write error or something like that.

My brother is looking to have the thing sent off for recovery. I hate to think how much that'll cost us. We'd have to buy a new drive as well, and while I don't mind doing that, I just don't know how I can afford 250 bucks recovery AND a new drive.

I could come around and have a look if you want.
I have tools and gadgets to attempt to fix problems with such things.
Especially if the hardrive is OK and it's just the case controller or power supply that's popped.

The idea of sticking it in the freezer and trying to get the data off is a good one.
Just try to make sure you put the drive in something water tight first, ziplock sandwich bags are usually good, as condensation and electricity are not a good combo.

FYI, I also have NTFS DiskInternals, which may be useful if the data is corrupt but the drive itself is mostly OK (and your drive was NTFS... if you had any files on the drive larger than 4.0 GB it would have to be NTFS).
