I disagree over his acting. I've seen him in a bunch of things (Jekyll, Millions, Bloody Sunday, Cold Feet) and thought he was great in all of them.

I'd give him a go as the Doctor. I was horrified when they announced Christopher Eccleston, but he turned out to be brilliant.

That said, out of the current rumoured 11th Doctors, I have to admit to liking the idea of Robert Carlyle the most.
