I'm no Dr. Who Doctor as it were so feel free to correct me on this but I think most of the doctor's companions over the years have been girls who are unanchored and unsure of their place in the world. You, Nancy, strike me as very anchored (very strong family ties) and very sure of who you are.
In short, the doctor might desperately need you in his adventures but what do you need from him?
