God speed, Clare Oliver. Your message is slowly spreading. I wish you could have been around to see its effect.

You're braver than words can say.

~~*~~

I'm going to honour her by passing on a message.

Tanning - ANY TANNING - is skin damage. Avoid it! UV rays, whether from the sun or a solarium, can give you cancer! Solarias are are usually MUCH WORSE than the sun. The only safe tan, sadly, is a fake one.

The best thing to do is enjoy your natural skin tone. PALE IS BEAUTIFUL TOO!!!

Some of us live in lattitudes where our choices are 1) tan, 2) burn, 3) never go outside during the day in the summer. This is what we get, I suppose, for having ancestors with the irresitible urge to traipse around the world and Bother People. I wear sunscreen on a regular basis and a sun hat and I still get a stripey driver tan or I get burned if I'm not careful.

I also own a parasol, and sometimes I use it. It has butterflies on it. I don't feel so much like Scarlett O'Hara as a very short drag queen when I have it, but even in Athens, GA it's a little...much...for some occasions.

I live in Perth, Australia. I know *all* about unavoidable tans. Of course some of us can't help but go brown in the summer. But one needs to understand that any sort of tan is skin damage. It's the truth of the matter, whether one likes it or not.

As soon as it gets sunny I wear hats. Hats, sunglasses and SPF 30 daily moisturiser. It's a lot of fuss but I already had to have one mole removed from my breast, I'm not game on having more funny spots turn up on my body.

I actually find long flowing scarves and sarongs very helpful in keeping the sun off. Then again, I'm not adverse to looking like a hippy. LOL!

If you try to tan when it's not in your make-up, you end up looking leathery and odd like Lindsay Lohan. Take care of that beautiful milky white skin, my dear.

I'm with ya!!! I love being pale! Grated, when I wear black capri pants my legs look like snow, but I don't care. My lower arms get a little tan because I walk in short sleeves, but that's about it.

I never got this obsession with being tan, seriously. t's not worth it, and better pale than orange.

Ahem sister! I tan very easily no matter the sunblock I use. However, 7 months ago, I had a cancerous melanoma spot removed from my left shoulder blade. I have never laid out in the sun but I do swim a lot in the summer and have forgot to put sunscreen on. Two summers ago, I forgot on the hottest day of the year and ended up with a severe burn on my left shoulder which is exactly where the melanoma spot was. Needless to say I still swim but I lather on the sunblock religiously even in the winter.

I agree. Pale is beautiful and fake tans are far safer than ruining your skin permanently just to look tanned for a little while.

Thanks Nancy. You have reminded me that I need a new hat (I have two, but one is broken- yeah, it's weird that a hat can be broken, but this one is- and the other is an akubra, which looks a little odd walking around the city. Nobody seems to wear hats here, and it's the skin cancer capital of the world! Crazy stuff.

I don't tan. I can't really. I just freckle and/or burn. Woot.

For a while there in the nineties it sort of died. Probably because of Titanic and how pale Kate Winslet was in that. The pendulum has swung back though. It's a shame!

Yeah, I tan easily too! Having a suspect melanoma removed really sends it home, doesn't it? I try to take as much care of my skin as is humanly possible. LOL!

There are actually some pretty good tanning products out there. I had an excellent spray-on tan that really suited me and didn't look orange. You just have to be careful which product you use.

I wear hats religiously. I get funny looks but I look much younger than people my age who've let themselves get sun damage.
