Man. News just came through - happened three minutes ago.

I grew up listening to the man. He is the tenor that every other tenor strives to be as good as. I remember watching a movie with him in it when I was a kid. I was mesmerised by his singing. Nobody has the passion he did, he just soared on every note. I can't even think right now, I'm in shock. :(

His duets with Dame Joan were just -- otherworldly. You listen to those two and you know you're hearing the pinnacle of the human voice. It doesn't get any better than that. That's the sort of thing that gets listened to hundreds of years from now.

I'll miss you, Luciano. The world is much poorer without you.

What? Where are you seeing that? I've been watching the news sheets for about an hour now, and I'm just seeing that he's unconscious, not that he's gone.

I'm sorry :( I was keeping my eyes out, because I thought it looked grim, but then I saw a headline :(

BBC flashed it up too.

Pavarotti had almost God-like worship in this house.

His duets with Dame Joan were just -- otherworldly.

Amen to that.

... this world will be so lonely without the passion of his voice. :*(

Oh how very very sad!
I just heard that this morning too.
I have always loved Luciano and his work. He was a true talent.
He also reminds me so much of my dad that it's like losing him all over again too.
A lot of people would comment on how my dad reminded them of Pavarotti in the way he looked and carried himself and when he'd sing at church and stuff. I mean my dad was nowhere near the singer that Pavarotti was but he sounded notsobad.

Funny story about my dad and Pavarotti...
When my son was 2 and we were watching a Christmas special on PBS, Pavarotti came out to sing. Suddenly my son dropped what he was doing and ran over to the TV. He was poking at it with his chubby little finger and calling out "Gampa Jim! Gampa Jim! Mama mama! Gampa Jim!"
He thought it was my dad too. We thought that was just about the funniest thing ever :-D

He's 11, will be 12 in Nov, and he remembers doing that too. I told him about Pavarotti's passing today. He was a little sad.
But today was his first day back to school!
He's at a new school and he really likes it. He said the teacher let them listen to the local jazz station even. He loves jazz.

Oh he likes all kinds of stuff he says. They play a wide variety of music, some older stuff, some newer stuff. He likes the instrumentals better than the ones with people singing he says :-)

I like ragtime, big band, real old school stuff. :) Well, I like any jazz, but that old stuff really gets me bouncing. As soon as I hear the Charleston I start dancing! :D

Oh I know! Charleston, swing all that bouncy jazz is good stuff. I also like that smoky bluesy jazz and like 60's beatnick jazz and the soulful women singers like Etta James and Billie Holiday.
I really like horns too. Any of those sax/trumpet players... that's good stuff right there.

It was Nessun dorma that did it, made me go "Waaaaaa!" (Did I even spell it right?)

OMG.
This is the first I've heard of it. I don't listen to the news much, so a lot tends to pass me by.
This is so sad!
I loved his voice so much! Nessun Dorma gives me chills every time.
He was my Mom's favorite tenor, too. I would always sway between him and Placido Domingo, but he was the end-all for her.
No one will ever come close to his brilliance.

He was the end-all for me. I couldn't listen to other tenors do the songs he did (Nessun Dorma particularly) cause they'd always sound less impressive in comparison. I was watching him last night on TV and I was struck by how *effortless* he made it all seem. Some tenors look like they're going to explode but he just looked like he was concentrating calmly and it was only *after* he finished singing that you see he was exerting himself, you know? He was just amazing!

The only tenor I think that comes close these days is little Andrea Bocelli. But he still isn't quite as good as Pavarotti. *sigh*

Luckily we have a lot of awesome recordings of the man.
