So, Dave came over on his way home from work. He turned the computer on and off, had a listen to it, and looked up stuff on the net. It's of his opinion that it's totally buggered and that there's probably nothing to be done about it - it's just old.

Fuck. All my stuff is on the hard drive. I never backed the shit up, cause I'm a fucking idiot. I just sat down ont he floor and bawled my eyes out because of the work that's on there. Dunno how the fuck I'm supposed to get it off.

And now I have absolutely NOTHING to do for the next few days. And when I'm recovering, I'll have nothing to do. Cause sitting upright is apparently painful after surgery. I probably couldn't rest the fucking thing on my lap anyway.

Point being - big stop in my writing. My writing was the only thing making me feel productive and now it's gone. I'm so fucking depressed.

unless the harddrive is dead, getting stuff off it should be relatively easy... assuming that it's got a standard 2.5" hdd, which I imagine it does.

Yeah, us geeks have little caddy's to stick a laptop hard drive in and then plug into another computer.

I will come round again some time, probably on the weekend, and get your stuff off it. It will probably require significant disassembly.

(just in case Kate reads this) - something in the power or battery board has failed, not sure what exactly, probably the power supply. Its just possible that its a fuse and can be fixed easily, but I'm not optimistic. Power supplys do just tend to die as laptops get older.

No no, you can take the hard drive out. You just open up a thing on the side and it slides out. No disassembly required.

if you can get hold of a usb caddy, you can take the hdd out, plug it in to the caddy and get the files off that way.

I have one you can use if Dave can't do anything for you. I'm not sure when I'd have time to do it though. The other alternative is to show up to a computer store and sweet talk them in to doing it for you.

This is all assuming that the hdd is working.

I have a laptop HDD -> full IDE adaptor sitting around if it's going to help. Also a few laptop parts of various eras (although that's likely to be less help)

Well, if you happen to have the power supply boardof a Toshiba Satellite 4080, that would help a lot. But otherwise, not so much :-)

I think I have one of those adapters somewhere, too. The laptop ones are apparently super cheap these days though.

I don't know, I've never read their stuff. I don't read much fiction. I'm mostly the kind of girl that'll be engrossed in a book about some bunch of animals with heaps of text and lots of pretty pictures. I'm presently reading a book about sharks and rays, I'm about halfway through. The pictures make me feel calm. Ocean, beautiful animals. I'm such a dork. LOL!

OK, well, so far I'll bring around Promethea GNs 1-3, "Exile's Valor" by Mercedes Lackey (talking pretty horses!), "Born to Run" by Mercedes Lackey (elves with cars), and one of Lois McMaster Bujold's books. I'll see if I can be done with my Tamora Pierce book by tomorrow. That should keep you in reading material for a little while, anyway :-)
