UGH! OKay.

So, I've made the two parts - the lining with the canvas, and then I cut out and sewed together the vinyl, because I figured the vinyl didn't need canvas cause it was so think.

Every time I SEW the thing, the vinyl STRETCHES. So it ends up being too BIG for the underneath bit. Dear God, I am going MAD! *head-thunk* There's nothing I can do. It won't fit. FUCK. I'm thinking I'll have to unpick it all and get another material or something.

FUCK!!! Any suggestions? Throw 'em my way.

I've had similar problems when I used jersey-type fabric for a project. In the end I used bondweb interfacing and bonded the material to a light cotton or calico. That decreased the distortion quite a bit.

I hope that helps a bit.

Sorry, forgot to add:

You'll have to obiviously place the vinyl underneath (maybe sit in on a thick towel) and have brown paper or something on top of the bondweb sandwich. You'll just have to use a coolish iron and take things very slowly to minimise meltage ;)

Generally with fabric that stretches when you sew it, all you really need is lots and lots of patience, and to pin the fuck out of it before you sew *s* I've had a similar problem with velvet (where the top layer 'creeps' because the pile shifts - OMG, it's a nightmare). I'd suggest pinning every inch or so and taking it really slowly. Or you could get a stiff interlining and bond it to the edges where you're going to sew (a couple of centimetres? Depending on how big your seam allowance is).

Vinyl is a pain in the arse to sew with, but it's manageable as long as you go slow and have patience (easier said than done, I know - I'm the least patient sewer the world has ever seen, and my current corset doesn't even have a lining because I couldn't be bothered sewing it :">) Good luck :)

Bondweb interfacing? I've never heard of that before.

ok. MY problems with vinyl I like to kill by using paper.

Sounds dumb, but if you put a sheet of thin paper, like tissue or an unfolded paper napkin on either side of what you're sewing, you can still see through it, and the materials tend to stay together a lot better.

Hope that helps, sewing vinyl really does suck.

Yeah, it's looks a bit like fabric, but it's really a sheet of heat-activated glue designed specifically for dress-makers etc.

It's commonly sold by the roll for no-sew hems, but if you go to a haberdashers they should sell it by the metre.

Ah... I think Clare in Sydney recently had success with 'healing' holes in vinyl. I'll try to dig up the right post for you.
