Casting Tonks...

Until the sixth movie is cast, we only have JKR's descriptions and our own imaginations to go on as far as what Tonks looks like. For those of us writing Tonks stories, this isn't enough. We like to search out a face, a living, breathing face, that can animate the character in our heads and make them real.

So. I'm trying to find an actress to be Tonks until WB with vaster and better resources, completes the job.

She has to be british, with the cockney charm and everything. Names that were bandied about in a chat:

- Anna Freils (Yes I realise the irony of this, I didn't realise she was going out with David Thewlis until someone told me in the chat)
- Jane Horrocks (both her and Anna would have to be younger, and they're not, so darn).

The ladies in chat liked Samantha Morton, but I don't know if she really does it for me.

Hmm, interesting choices. Will have to think on this. Problem is I'm so biased by your drawings I'd keep looking for that rare actress to fit that mold.

I think Anna Freils would be great, but she may have just had the baby then.

I don't know why Samantha Morton is Tonks in my head (or as close as I have found). I think it has something to do with the way she speaks, too. She just reminded my instantaneously of Tonks when I saw In America. *shrug*

Actually, the age difference between David Thewlis and Anna Friel is the same number of years (13!) as it would be between Lupin and Tonks -- assuming the generally accepted calculation of Tonks' birth year is correct. :)

However, Anna would still most likely be considered too old. I mean in the movie industry it's always okay for male actors to be much older than their characters -- Alan Rickman as Snape is a great example of this, as Rickman is almost 58! -- but women actors are almost always cast younger than their characters. Perpetuates the double standard, you see. Sad but true.

As for Tonks, I don't think I've seen her yet. Some shots of Natalie Imbruglia are close to my mental image of Tonks -- that's why I use her -- but she's not British and her age is wrong too. It will be very interesting to find out who the casting gurus come up with to play our darling.

Natalie is an actress, but I doubt she could get the accent right. Dude, I so didn't know about Anna going out with David. I was like, "What? Man! I even ship when I'm not LOOKING!" Sad but true.

Hmm, I'm tempted to go with Anna until I find someone better. Though I do like Natalie because she actually has a heart-shaped face.

I was pondering this the other day, and was wondering about Kiera Knightley. She's got the age whipped, she's British, and with a little snip-snip of her hair I think she could pull it off.

I don't like her very much. She's too pretty and she looks as though you could break her in half. She also does this funky pouty thing with her mouth and it gets on my nerves. She had short hair in Bend It Like Beckham if you wanted to see her with short hair. :)

Oh I love HBC!! I had considered her. She's been in so many movies I've seen, I wanted to see someone I didn't know, which is why I didn't list her. She certainly is awesome, though. :)
