Oh my God. I am quite sorry for all the Death-Eater apologists out there. This little FAQ session with JKR illustrates quite clearly the Death-Eater/Nazi connection (which I never doubted for a minute).

Then again, those that will glorify villians will find themselves trying to make some rather horrible people seem not so bad.

My maternal grandfather was Jewish. Therefore my mother and all her children (including me) would've been destined for the ovens in Nazi Germany, and our grandmother (who was Catholic) would've been sent to a concentration camp for harboring a Jew. Fortunately the Allies defeated Hitler and my family grew up in the USA and not Nazi Germany. But as someone with Jewish ancestry (as is John Kerry), I picked up on the Death Eaters = Nazis parallel right away.

Thank you. As I've said all along- that makes the Slytherin the equivalent to the Hitler Youth. Which makes Snape the equivalent of the LEADER of the Hitler Youth. He's the proverbial anti-semetic Nazis who just thought 'things went too far.'

I'm still waiting to see why I should think of him as a 'good guy' at all, despite a few pro-Dumbledore actions on his part. Maybe it will be explained better in the future.

Yeah, sad but true. Jewish/Christian intermarriage was much more common in Imperial Germany than in, say, Victorian England, as Germany was already much more religiously heterogeneous with the Protestant North and Catholic South. Many of the German Jews were much more "cultured" and secular than the Jews of Eastern Europe (and in some cases, looked down upon them) and thus didn't see intermarriage to fellow Germans, even if of a different faith, as something to be forbidden or decried.

The Nazis even had a term for those of mixed Jewish heritage: Mischlinge, which roughly translates as "mongrel" (Or so I think, ask your father?). Even one Jewish grandparent was enough to be considered Jewish...odd, seeing as Hitler's paternal grandfather was apparently a Jew.

It's not as cut and dried as that, though: the German Navy in particular refused to kick out officers for having Jewish heritage; I know of at least three or four admirals of the Nazi era who openly claimed at least one Jewish grandparent. Even Hitler himself signed off on many "Declarations of Pure Blood" certifying that no, the person in question wasn' "tainted" by Jewish blood.

I don't doubt the Hitler/Voldie Nazi/Death Eater parallel for a moment, and even discussed it on my LJ a few weeks back.

By the way, my paternal grandfather was Jewish. And Russian to boot. That would have made him doubly damned in Hitler's eyes. It's odd to consider what might have happened had his father not been wounded in WWI and left Europe, since they lived in Poland, where almost all the Jews were eradicated...
