Can't believe I'm saying this...
Aug. 28th, 2010 07:41 pmBut good show, Channel 7.
I just saw one of their "FatCat tells kids it's time for bed" shorts. Fat Cat is sat at a kid-size set of drums. A little girl gets ready.
Then she ROCKS THE FUCK OUT on a little toy guitar. The music being played? Not bubble-gum pop, but power-chord driven rock'n'roll, with Fat Cat providing some awesome beats. Then Fat Cat and the girl dance along to the music. Then the girl puts Fat Cat to bed.
She is wearing pink PJs, but other than that, she's not dolled up or anything, she's a normal little girl in regular pyjamas. Her room isn't a violent explosion of pink, though that's probably got more to do with saving money on set costs than anything. But I was pleasantly surprised by the joy this little girl was allowed to show in metal sounding music, and the fact that she was so thoroughly a little girl in this pursuit.
As a woman that's loved rock music since childhood, and has found the cultural narrative to be that women don't really rock, not like men do, this ad was just lovely. Thank you, Channel 7. Please keep that sort of thing up.
