7:30 Report: Australian Doctors do not treat pain appropriately and do not help those in pain.

To which I say: NO FUCKING SHIT.

IF I GET TOLD THAT I NEED TO SEE A PSYCHOLOGIST ABOUT MY PAIN ONE MORE FUCKING TIME, I WILL SCREAM IN THEIR FACES.

AND PUNCH THINGS.

Sing it sister!

Hell, most GPs won't even admit that chronic pain is a serious fucking issue and "Just take some painkillers when you need them" is totally counter-helpful.

*grrrs!*

Yeah, tell me about it. If I took painkillers when I needed them, I'd be taking opiates at least three times daily. Which I can't do, I'll get addicted. I'm probably already addicted on the two doses I have ever second day.

I was impressed by it. Hopefully it'll mean a turn around in the constant 'people claiming chronic pain must be drug addicts' reporting that's been doing the rounds. I'm fairly sure there's only two pain management centres in Perth (fairly sure there's not even any private faculties) so maybe more infrastructure will come out of this.

Hopefully it'll also mean orthopedic surgeons will be taken down a peg or two when they accuse you of making up the pain for drugs, for a better payout or 'it's_just_ being a stress thing, ignore it'.

Not that I'm bitter. ;P

Two pain management centres, one didn't take me on because I wasn't in enough pain, even though at that time, I was taking multiple doses of codeine a day to deal with the PAIN.

Fuckers.

You would love my pharmacology lecturer. She's a pain specialist (a PhD doctor, not a medical one, but that's her field of research), and she loves a good rant about how so many patients suffer from pain unnecessarily because doctors have no idea about good pain management. Hearing her speak is like a slap in the face and a wake-up call all at once, and I've basically sworn that once I'm a doctor, I'll take her words to heart, because as someone who has - at various points and for various reasons - suffered pain that doctors didn't know how to treat, I know for a fact that I'd never want any of my patients to go through that.

I wish you could be my doctor cause I'm not getting the help I need right now.

Give me...three years? and I can at least be your intern. I'm not planning on going into pain management myself, being rather more of a mental health person, but if I end up branching off into my side-interest (neurology), then I anticipate seeing all sorts of atypical pain presentations, so I figure it can't hurt to get interested in good pain management now, just in case.
