This is why we still need feminism.

ETA: From Yolanda at Feministe: Misogynist murder is framed as some personal relationship shit, as if the women who were killed last night all spurned the undying love of this man somehow. It is never understood for what it is: sheer oppressive terrorism—the violation/annihilation of an individual oppressed person in order to send a message of fear and dominance to the entire group.

A-fuckin'-MEN!

My thought, on seeing this story following hard on the heels of another round of SF gender-fail, was, This is why we need to keep talking about these issues, even if certain persons are tired of hearing about it.

I DO NOT love how the shooting is being framed as a result of his being rejected. Seriously?

Oh, and the hoary old chestnut - his mother was emasculating and traumatised him! Boo-fucking-hoo. Plenty of people have shitty mothers without shooting into a room full of defenseless women.

What really seems to be frightening about this whole thing is that, according to an article on Huffington Post, he was reading some crazy Gothardite/sexist religious stuff. From the post:

Media analysis has so far ignored or glossed over Sodini's religious affiliations but the shooter's Internet diary suggest his last readings were the Bible and a book by a Texas evangelist, R.B. Thieme, Jr. who has written that husbands own their wives, as literal property and promoted an odd teaching that for each man on Earth there exists only one correct "right woman" in all creation. According to Thieme, men can recognize their divinely-appointed opposites without physical contact, through something Thieme called "soul climax" [see R.B. Thieme, Jr.'s "Doctrines of The Bible: Doctrine of Right Man and Right Woman" (Microsoft Word Document format).]

Holy shit! I haven't looked at the links in the article, but I will be later on...

Oh great, so these religious nutballs are jizzing in their pants and deciding who belongs to them without even speaking to them? That's perfectly sane. :(
