There was "A Pocketful of Rye" on ABC1 tonight. There's a new Miss Marple. I like her, I really like her. I didn't realise until this new Marple was on the scene that I didn't have that much of a problem with Marple: I didn't like the actress playing her. She imbued Marple with a superior gossipy quality.

This new Marple, though, has a kind and open face. I've seen her in things before and I've always liked her. You can easily imagine people trusting her, or dismissing her as an old biddy. You could imagine people either liking her or being aggravated with her. And she looks bloody smart.

I think I'm just a bitch when it comes to certain actors. If I don't like their faces, or their voices, I'll just be turned off the entire production. Like Potato-head in the new Bond films (I forget his name). Or that Irish guy in Jekyll. Can't stand him either. He's always this smug bastard who gets women far more attractive than he'd ever realistically pull.
I guess it isn't very fair of me. Ah well.

Have you seen "Murder By Death", the bizarre Neil-Simon-penned murder mystery parody starring Alec Guinness and Truman Capote (among many many others)? Truly, Elsa Lanchester *is* Miss Marples for me. XD

If by "Potato-head in the new Bond films" you mean "Daniel Craig the best James Bond since Connery", then I just don't know what to say to you... : )

Grant, I can't stand James Bond movies in the first place! LOL! I appreciate their place in culture but as a feminist I just don't have interest in a movie series where women have no part in it other than objects of desire or to be subservient to Mr. Bond. Or to try and kill them with their sexy wiles. It's just boring to me.

I do like a lot of the actors that played Bond, though. I like Sean Connery's work but loathe a lot of his attitudes. He has no issue with abusing his wife, the fuckstick.

See, I really like the two new ones with Daniel Craig, because I think they've been changing a lot of that. They're deliberately constructing a new Bond where instead of the films being mean-spirited and mysogynistic, they're now films about a mean-spirited mysogynist, if you get the difference. It seems to me the whole point of the franchise at the moment is to demonstrate that Bond's job is turning him into an irredeemable monster.

A big difference has been made by their continued use of Judi Dench as M since 1995, and in the two Craig ones in particular she's been doing marvellous work.

All that said, I can totally understand if they're not your cup of tea!! I'm just glad we got past the sleazy innuendo of the Brosnan films - it was tacky but par for the course in the 1970s, but in the 1990s it made Bond into a Carry On film.
