logansrogue: (It's very special!)

I found an old book on human evolution in my brother's "Do Not Want" book pile. I grabbed it in delight as it looks shady and old and full of shaky facts. There are wet apes in it, I think.

Is it ridiculous that I'm practically shaking in antipication to curl up in bed and read it? Reason being, it should be great to kick-start some ideas for my Mermaid Encyclopaedia (I need a better name for it, something old-timey and verbose).

I'm going to read it now. Fuck it, I'm not doing anything else tonight, and it counts as work if it's contributing to one of my projects, right? ... Right?

*contented kitty smile*

Does it have any of those super-dodgy illustrations showing the different stages of human development- 6 or so pictures from ape to human, with the object getting lighter and lighter as it evolves closer to humans?

Made it up. The professor M. MacLlyr is a reference to the sea god, Mananann Mac Llyr (various spellings)

Feel free to use and abuse it.

Old books smell wonderfully! My two favorite non-food-related smells are old book and fresh print. Before I read an old book, I need to bury my nose in it for a few seconds. ^_^

And anything that makes me think of the "world according to 19th century" kicks ass!

Oh, not quite, it's from 1977. And it's not a bad book, actually. For the information the guy had that wrote it, he does a rather sterling job. Basically a lot of, "Well, with what we have, this is what we can guess, but we're not sure - here are the different theories."

I love it though, there's a picture of Lucy and they haven't named her yet. She's a new find!!! LOLOL!

Even if "only" twenty or thirty years old, book would be old enough for that mature smell. ^^ One of the reasons I love rereading my mother's old copies of the Lord of the Rings. (Even if it is the infamous first Swedish translation where a pronoun switch took away some of Eowyn's glory in the defeat of the Witch King. Oh, and where the ancient races "mooed" instead of "roaming", because Swedish for mooing=råma which sounded close enough for the translator.)

Reminds me of old dictionaries from the thirties where Adolf's a current German politician. :D (Mmm, old book smell...)

Mooing ancient races! Brilliant! My aunt has a copy of that infamous Agatha Christie novel, "Ten Little Niggers". I so want a copy! The one I have is "And Then There Were None". (Which really is a much better name, when you come to think about it).

Dude, my Dad's birth certificate has swastikas all over it (he was born in 1940).

Yeah, it has the old book smell. I love old book smell. If I see an old book, I just have to open it and look at the old print and the crinkle of the pages *swoon*.
