Okay, so remember how I was saying my laptop was being wiggy?

Well, every intrepid, my boyfriend and I pulled apart V'Ger (as she came to me on a long journey) and lo and behold we discovered... she is terminally ill. A surge fried the power thingo. It fried the motherboard right at the connection, there is soot. :( I wanted to cry.

So it all came down to retrieving the HD and recovering the precious, precious fic and writing from it.

Needed: Either an IDE cable or something that can read the HD. The pins are 2 1/2 inch connector, Paul reckons. I don't know the specifics of the harddrive and I don't know how many pins are on it but it's pretty fine. Can anyone help me? (Shig?)

Oh. I have a laptop I can try to put it in. Mum's old one. I might still need help, though. Lemme know if you can help. ETA: I can't get to the HD on Mum's lappie without opening it and we are taking it to get fixed this week - I don't want to fuck it up and cost Mum lots of money. I want that laptop to work cause it's the ONLY ONE I HAVE ACCESS TO. (It's her old one that she's giving to me, needs new fan and audio input bit).

Long story short - my RIP V'Ger Laptop. She was a good lappie, used and true. We enjoyed a lot of pr0n together. Many lesbians and faggots did spurt with joy upon her old, dim screen. Much fic was laboured over. Many games of Kyodai Mahjongg and Flipwords were played. All in all, fun was had. You were a good lappie. *tear*

Hrm, usually at times like these I'll go for an external USB enclosure - they make them for 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives, though the smaller ones usually don't require an external power supply. You just plug it into the USB port of another computer, and poof, it's just like a jump drive.

Of course, I don't remember now whether V'Ger is a Mac, which may or may not change the equation. I've never worked on one before.

I'd loan you one of my enclosures, but I'm sorta in San Diego, and it's a big ocean.

Not a mac. Is PC. And thank you, even if you are in San Diego. :) It's the thought that counts.

external drive holdery thing.
They're not particularly expensive, if you want to buy one, or, borrow one of the many geek friends, who I daresay, have some lying around.

I have one, the only caveat is, it that the connectors on it are firewire only ... no USB.

I have an IDE -> USB caddy for laptop harddrives permanently in my work toolkit for pretty much these situations.

Do you want the contents on another machine or on DVDs or other?

I can get an external 2.5" enclosure for $8 from a store here called MSY, they don't have any stores in WA but I could ask my industry friends if there is a chain in WA that has comprable prices? Yes? No?

Sorry, no MSY in WA and no equvilents according to my sources. Do you want me to pick one up and send it over? If I take it out of the packaging the postage would probably be less than $10.

If the total is less than $20 you can consider it a belated birthday present, or an early christmas, what ever. I'll send you an email confirming that I have your address right. Speaking of email, didn't I send you one a few weeks back? *nudge nudge wink wink*
