Okay. I saw that mass boat rally here in Perth for the North Port Quay development.

It's time to counter that fucking shit. Who's with me? I am totally serious. It's time to show that we're not going to let our beautiful beaches be destroyed by developments. I want there to be a big freakin' protest but I know nothing about running these things and how to get the word out and stuff. I'd need help. Surely there must be some environmental groups wanting to step in and make a stand too?

I'm thinking on this. I'm scheming.

I thought, "Mass demonstration of people, with a group of women in mermaid costumes." Cause that would get attention. Very possibly negative attention but shit - whatever gets the cameras on us, right?

While I disagree with most Marine developments, as someone who has SCUBA dived there many times I don't have a problem with this particular one. The marine area there is... well... shit to be honest. Part of the devolpment there will be preserving existing beach and also creating several new reef's for fish which is cool.

An interesting point was brought up on fremantlebiz on livejournal: The shipping lanes are pretty much chaotic and packed as it is at the moment. This development is going to put a HUGE strain on already limited space. Let's not even address the fact that current infrastructure simply cannot support a development of this size.

The beauty of this area is the space and the natural beauty. I agree there need to be more boat ramps and pens. We have to ease the pressure on the Swan river. But a huge honking development like this is just hideous and completely inappropriate for the area. Personally I'm going to fight the fucking thing.

ETA: Yeah, the marine landscape in that part of the ocean may not be a dazzling barrier reef but the kelp beds are needed. We might not be amazed by them but they serve a purpose, you know?

If t was kelp beds or something of use then sure, unfortunately what you have there is filthy skanky silt/mud from endless boat traffic and rubbish. It really isn't pleasant.

I should also mention that personally knowing one of the very rich people investing in this project, I know they are taking environmental impact very seriously, that being a big part of the whole point of this. The resedential section is slated to be an example of creating sustainable, low impact dwelling.

I am personally sad that the government poo-pooed the idea the second it was announced, seemingly because they didn't come up with the idea.

...Yes. Because thousands of rich bastards in their oil-spewing boats living in the middle of the ruddy water is going to fix the mucky filth problem.

Obviously we should agree to disagree on this one. Your friend might want to be eco friendly but the main reason they're doing this is for the cash. Why do you think they're rich in the first place?

If you want to get something started, why not set up a group or event on Facebook and start inviting people and encouraging others?

It might not work, but it's a start

And it has nothing to do with the fact that you like dressing up as a mermaid, right? ;)
