Having a small moment of panic.
May. 5th, 2008 11:09 amI'm trying to update my approach to making websites. That's no more HTML. I'm practicing with the new Gabrielle and Joxer Romantics Society website. I think this is what going mad feels like.
- I have links at the top. I have no idea how to make sure those links work, like... when I click them, I want to go to a page where the proper tab is highlighted and the content is new. It's okay, I just figured that one out. Hallelujah!
- There's all this stuff that's supposed to be a feed, I think. For a blog or something. Which would be nice but I have NO IDEA HOW TO EMBED SOMETHING LIKE THAT. Or ... ANYTHING.
- There's a gallery thing at the bottom. Element. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THAT? I mean, I want a gallery with my website, but how would I even get something like that TO WORK?
In short:
I HATE YOU WORLD WIDE WEB CONSORTIUM, YOU PACK OF USELESS FUCKING WHORES. I read your damned website all about css and I'm FUCKING CONFUSED.
I hate coding. I HATE CODING SO FUCKING MUCH. I just want to make the pretty fucking pictures, you know? That's what I do well. Write text, come up with ideas and make pretty pictures.
HTML WAS NEVER THIS HARD. I MISS THE 90's DAMN IT ALL.

Date: 2008-05-05 04:27 am (UTC)What I'm trying to figure out is how assholes get to have a nice little feed on their site, you know? Like Leaky Cauldron or hpana.org. They have a little blog or whatever embedded on the first page, but the whole damned site isn't a blog, just a little element on a certain page. That's all I want, damn it! I'm fucking around with Wordpress but I don't know what the hell I'm doing. *sigh*

Date: 2008-05-07 02:49 pm (UTC)I use Drupal for my new personal website, and it was a bit of a bitch to install, but I had a programmer friend walk me through it. But ... David Hewlett from SGA uses Joomla for his personal website, and he seems pretty happy with it. :)
Either way ... good luck! In general, I think installing them is a bit of a bitch, but in the end, it makes for much easier content management. :)
They use CSS design, which is deadly awesome because you just change the CSS files and the entire site gets the makeover. No more doing it page by page by page. :D Oh ... and then there are THEMES! *giddy*
Yea, I totally geek out over this stuff. lol

Date: 2008-05-05 04:30 pm (UTC)I picked up the bits I know from the lynda.com training site and by visiting CSS Zen Garden. After picking up what I could, I used that to try stuff in WordPress - took awhile, but I figured out enough to do what I wanted.
And for the really hard stuff I have the SiteGrinder plugin for Photoshop (which I only got because I convinced the office to buy it.)
But Zen Garden's an awesome resource... give a whirl.
