My Mum downloaded and ran 'Regcure' on my machine. She said it should speed my computer up.

No. It's slowed down. I don't know what's happened or what she's done, but even opening windows is becoming a chore. I have *no* idea what to do. I know my computer is cludged up with useless files, that's because I'm a horder. Before it took me a while to load Sims 2. It doesn't even load at ALL now. Just freezes on the loading screen.

Any suggestions you dudes might have would be welcome. I'm on the end of my rope right now.

It could be a few things ... RAM issue, CPU issue, Motherboard issue or it might be good to have a look at exactly which programs get loaded during startup. Some programs are RAM heavy and take up way too much of your processor time to think through. That's the extent of my IT smarts :)

Get ride of it again...if you have Windows XP you can go to an earlier point of recovering and this downloaded stuff will have no effect anymore.

Sounds like Windows arthritis—basically, programs tend to gunk up a Windows installation after about six months. The best treatment is a reinstallation. It's actually better to reformat and start with a blank slate, but then you have to put all your data back and reinstall everything. Fortunately, you may be able to "install over" your current copy of Windows.

If you have an actual Windows install CD (as opposed to one of those restore CDs), use it to install Windows without deleting your current copy. Then reinstall Service Pack 2 and the stuff off of Windows Update. That tends to restore a lot of internal Windows stuff, and you shouldn't lose any programs (and absolutely won't lose any data unless you accidentally tell it to reformat).

If you just have a restore CD (or a restore partition on your hard drive), you're out of luck on installing over. But if it really bothers you, you can do a full reinstallation—back up all the data that's on the same hard drive as Windows and get a printout from the Device Manager, the invoke the restore partition/disk and restore Windows's factory setup. Again, install all Windows updates. Reinstall all programs you need. Finally, restore your data.

Or, y'know, get a Mac. Or Linux. *eyeshift* (Neither of them ever has this sort of problem, because they're written by people who can do proper software engineering. Of course, most people are stuck with Windows...)
