It's a matter of choice (on eating; and the environment)

A really good post by Pen, and you know, even the stuff about minding what you eat and eating less meat is appropriate because both where you get your meat from and what kind of meat you eat can make a big difference.

You don't have to stop eating meat to help the environment. For example, instead of beef (which ended up costing 30 bucks for some fillets which is outrageous) my Mum bought kangaroo fillets which can be prepared just the same as beef and is actually better for you - less fat, more iron. If it served native Australians for 40000 years I think it can do us some good too. It's a bit like turkey, a bit like beef, I couldn't really tell what I was eating when I first tried it. It's a new taste so it might weird some people out but it's good stuff and it is good for you. Kangaroo is not just for cats and dogs. It's also much better for the environment because:

- Kangaroos don't fart methane or breathe it out
- Kangaroos require less grass and vegetation for survival than do cows
- They also need far less water.

For Australia that is incredibly important to our resources.

Kangaroo also doesn't cause erosion like hooved livestock do. They're from Australia and designed to live here, so they're Aussie-friendly all round.

Yeah, I forgot that point. Plus there's so many of the big red ones that they need to cull them off - may as well consume them! :)

I have never eaten much meat.... BUT I love kangaroo meat, it is so tender and tastey, I dont think its gamey at all.

You MUST try the mini roasts.. my god theyre soooo tender, make sure u cook as suggested (15 min in covered tray, 15 min uncovered and then out of oven and wrapped for 15 min) Ive never had such lean tasty tender meat before!!!!

It is much more enviro friendly to eat roo meat - and they dont clear forests and bushland to grow roos - they already exist and are thriving because of our shitty farming practices.

I think ppl have to get over the whole 'skippy' thing --- I mean how many people eat COW meat yet how many millions of ppl consider cows sacred around the world?????

Besides all that, its full of goodness and so lean well and YUMMMMI!!!

*Giggles* Oh, I was being a bit sobbity. Over in these here parts, we may only see a kangaroo in a zoo or cute cartoon and if we ever saw one, we'd probably oooh and fawn--They're put right up there with panda bears and baby sheep, really. ...If baby sheep were rare. And not also called veal. ...Yeah.

Haha. But no, yeah, it's one of those things where it's like, "Kangaroo!" "Kangaroo?! Where?! I want to seeee!" And if it were like, "No, no...Kangaroo! Try some!" People would be like ":(:(:(:(!"

Teehee. Oh, God, I really hope I'm not sounding bitchy, I actually think it's really funny, that stuff's so normal and every-day one place is such a surprising concept somewhere else. Does that make sense?
...Do I sound really horrible? It's like two in the morning, I might just be entertaining myself here. Please don't hate me.

Kangaroo!

Not bitchy at all!

Believe me, if you've actually been around a kangaroo, especially a full sized red, they stop being so cute. I was bashed up by a grey kangaroo when I was a kid because I wasn't giving it bread fast enough. Scared the SHIT out of me. Ever since then?

I'll eat them with impunity. LOL!

(Apparently they DO make good pets though).

And what about widdle baby calfs? They're SO CUTE. And cows can also be adorable. But they taste so good! See? Same conundrum. I love all animals and I struggle with the guilt - I'm not going to favour one animal over the other.

I almost hit a BIG male grey roo on Saturday morning. Swore loudly, saw my life flash before my eyes, braked heavily and swerved.

Amazingly this roo had the prescence of mind to turn AWAY from my car, or else it would have been very bad news for both of us.

Damn roos. ;)

They're so very big and solid. Once my sister hit a roo on the way home from Carnamah. Not just a tiny roo, either. A fucking big red one. It left this roo-shaped dent in the front of our combi-van, it was SO FUNNY. Like, I felt sad for the roo but the dent - the DENT. It looked like the unpainted tail of a QANTAS jet!! LOL

And I just realized that I typed 'baby sheep' and veal where 'baby cow' should have been and it got all messed up and wow okay I'm done.

I love you?

If we had them in the US, I'd vote Eat Em. I see no distinction between meat -- just because we like cats and dogs don't make them any less edible than cows and sheep. People like cows and sheep too. ;-P I just suppose if you're going to be ok killing and eating an animal, you can't make distinctions on cuteness. Better to choose the least-harmful and most human methods to feed ourselves, which I guess would be no meat at all ... but alas. (*grabs fork*)

Well, it's a different ecosystem in the US so I wouldn't expect for kangaroo to apply to you. I guess you guys would have to find an animal that's better for your environment. But hooved animals aren't as dangerous for you guys as it is to our ecosystem which only has soft-pawed marsupials.

I'm curious about the killing methods used on them; I think people have been very quick to cry "yay, native meat source, much better than european livestock!" and on that level, of course they are right. Kangaroos are much more suited to - and less likely to destroy - Australian land than cows or sheep. But I don't feel I know enough about the way they are 'harvested' to say "yup, awesome, let's go for it."

That said, I have eaten it, and kangaroo is very tasty. Especially barbecued.

Probably a bullet to the head like cows. I might try to find out, actually. You've opened that can of kangaroo meat for me now, girl!

I also worry about the killing methods -- unfortunately the only humanely killed meat I know of is kosher, and that costs a mint. Sigh. (That said, I prefer kangaroo to almost any other type of steak, but try making pasta sauce with it. Gross.)

It's just too strong. Kangaroo doesn't seem to go well with anything that gets its flavour from the sauce/spices. Somehow I don't think kangaroo stroganoff is going to take off. :D

Also, what about dairy? I live on dairy (I think I have more dairy than anything else, most days), and while I appreciate that cattle aren't fantastic for the environment, I do like my milk.

Heh, actually that reminds me of a rather apt 1924 poem by A. A. Milne (author of Winnie the Pooh). I hope you don't mind if I quote it in full; feel free to edit if you don't like it taking up space.

The King's Breakfast

The King asked
The Queen, and
The Queen asked
The Dairymaid:
"Could we have some butter for
The Royal slice of bread?"
The Queen asked the Dairymaid,
The Dairymaid
Said, "Certainly,
I'll go and tell the cow
Now
Before she goes to bed."

The Dairymaid
She curtsied,
And went and told the Alderney:
"Don't forget the butter for
The Royal slice of bread."

The Alderney said sleepily:
"You'd better tell
His Majesty
That many people nowadays
Like marmalade
Instead."

The Dairymaid
Said "Fancy!"
And went to
Her Majesty.
She curtsied to the Queen, and
She turned a little red:
"Excuse me,
Your Majesty,
For taking of
The liberty,
But marmalade is tasty, if
It's very
Thickly
Spread."

The Queen said
"Oh!"
And went to his Majesty:
"Talking of the butter for
The royal slice of bread,
Many people
Think that
Marmalade
Is nicer.
Would you like to try a little
Marmalade
Instead?"

The King said,
"Bother!"
And then he said,
"Oh, deary me!"
The King sobbed, "Oh, deary me!"
And went back to bed.
"Nobody,"
He whimpered,
"Could call me
A fussy man;
I only want
A little bit
Of butter for
My bread!"

The Queen said,
"There, there!"
And went to
The Dairymaid.
The Dairymaid
Said, "There, there!"
And went to the shed.
The cow said,
"There, there!
I didn't really
Mean it;
Here's milk for his porringer
And butter for his bread."

The queen took the butter
And brought it to
His Majesty.
The King said
"Butter, eh?"
And bounced out of bed.
"Nobody," he said,
As he kissed her
Tenderly,
"Nobody," he said,
As he slid down
The banisters,
"Nobody,
My darling,
Could call me
A fussy man -
BUT
I do like a little bit of butter to my bread!"

im sure it would be eaten more if it were more readily available in the supermarkets or butchers. i usually buy my meat at the butchers (fresher, better quality etc) but have never to this date seen kangaroo advertised there...
