I did a report for my research class on allopathy vs homeopathy, specifically on vaccine safety. I had to leave it inconclusive. There's simply a shift in paradigm between the groups and their thinking. It was very interesting to research though, if you can stomach all the mudslinging from both sides, and are able to wade through the emotional arguments, which on this kind of subject is unavoidable, perhaps properly so. Basically, if you're interested at all, they each believe the body works in different ways. So, trying to convince each other of the effectiveness of treatment one way or the other is doomed to failure, because what one side believes is a cure, the other sees as a cause of irreparable damage. That said, I think both sides have a point, and real, unbiased studies are needed before anyone can draw any conclusions at all. However, in my experience, herbs are a long term treatment before any change or help is seen, and only then with a lifestyle change (which begs the question, was it the change or the herb anyway) while drugs can treat the symptoms quicker. If I'm in the middle of a migraine, you can bet I'll be reaching for my prescription, not a peppermint candy. I don't think drugs and herbs have to be mutually exclusive, actually.
Well, I'm the same, you know? It's like religion and evolution. I believe in *both*. I don't see them as exclusive.
I'll take a buscopan (herb-derived anti-spasmoid for my smooth body muscle) AND a panadol when I'm perioding, you know? And when I'm needing to be sleepy, you bet I reach for a valerian. I don't see why it has to be either/or.
I figure that God knows how the world works, so why wouldn't He use its natural laws to build/maintain it? It's like saying that because I understand how something works, that proves its inventor doesn't exist! I've always thought that religion and science can coexist peacefully and perfectly coherently.
The millions of years that so elegantly brought about everything around us? Much more impressive than "Seven days BAM! Done!" That's how a God does things!
Now, it should be noted that I have been witness to an unusual recovery that didn't use meds or ANY treatment for that matter, but this was only once and it was really weird to begin with. Miracles do happen and all that jazz, yet... well... sometimes they don't. That's why people die and that's also why we have meds in the first place.
I've had meds that made me very sick and I've had a superbug that was created by humans abusing meds over time. But, that's LIFE. Shit happens. A solid fear of meds, like what these people seem to have here, is just as dangerous as someone popping every pill they can see. What happened to moderation? Ugh.
The person claiming that his uncle's AIDS was cured is very frightening. People can run around claiming that they found any odd or strange cure for what ails them and there's really no problem with that if they're only effecting themselves as a person. With AIDS and HIV, you're dealing with an eventually fatal disease that can be spread to others. There's been reports that youth in some places in North America believe that there's a cure for AIDS and thus have a relaxed view of safe sex. Encouraging people that taking some random herbs is going to prevent them from getting AIDS/HIV is like a time bomb.
From what I understand, there have been cases where children who were born infected with HIV have not manifested the full-blown version of AIDS until they were past puberty, and some early cases of this subset of cases often would 'pass' HIV tests, giving the impression that they'd been 'cured'. (I understand that sadly they hadn't, the tests just weren't good enough at that stage.)
But I'd say that's where this myth comes from - the kids who should have had AIDS but never seemed to develop it and who seemed to be cured but sadly weren't.
O.M.G. Yea, right. My grandfather's cancer could have been cured with vitamins. -_- Freaks. My aunt is one of those people and tried to get my dad to take my grandfather to this guy who would charge 64000$ for "cure" but he "couldn't guarantee them because my grandfather had been on pharmacutical meds for so long" ~ so basically he would have blamed the death on the DRUGS! HA. Those people need to be drawn and quartered, though not to death and then give them Vitamin C for the resulting pain!
Thing is, one really shouldn't bother talking to them anyway. It's not surprising at all that people believe that...I met crazy people like that. They think they are some kinds of Saints and God won't let anything bad happen to them or some other bullshit like that.
I'm still too disturbed by how trendy Scientology is. (But maybe that's a good thing, because it instills hope that it will be replaced by the next Hollywood fad.)
But wow, no really! A real master debater! (More in the pun sense than actual sense unfortunately.)
When will people realise that herbs ARE drugs?????? I get sick of people self medicating and being "natural" and not knowing what the fuck they are doing. Grrrrrr!!!!
I know! I tried explaining it to them! But nooooo. I'm WRONG. The fact I can't take certain vitamins cause they'll interact CHEMICALLY with my antidepressants is WRONG! GAH!
What a nitwit - and as somebody who worked in an AIDS pediatric call center at the CRO that I was at (and nearly had a nervous breakdown over it because talking to parents with dying children is, well, you get the picture), I can fullheartedly say that that idiot is full of shit.
