Oh YAY!

Guess what, folks?! It looks like I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome! Fucking YAY! So, here's a running tally of my chronic diseases:

- Endometriosis
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Migraines

That's three, count 'em, THREE debilitating, painful and incurable maladies for the price of one! Hooray! My doctor says that it doesn't make a difference if I change my diet, but Mum's decided that, considering my father has the same issues I do with his bowels, that she's going to try the family on some wheat-free reciples. That said, I don't know what the hell I'm going to have for breakfast. There's wheat in the house, oats. I guess I'll have some watermelon or something.

*sigh* I have a website to put up. For my friend. Once that's done, I'm zenning out. Somehow.

Oh, that sucks! *hugs*

I've known a few people with IBS, and I don't think it's true that diet does nothing. Not eating certain things really does help.

Cool. I'll look forward to the new taste sensations my mother has on the menu, then. :)

My girlfriend has IBS and her gut problems are fairly closely linked to her stress levels. Of course, having to poo constantly can raise her levels of stress...

That's the shit-crazy thing - I'm not stressed! At least, I don't think so. I get annoyed by my Dad, and that's the most stressful thing in my life, I think. I get lonely, but that's not the same as stress. It's really weird!

Yeah, that's really weird. I think the other thing about IBS is that everyone experiences it differently. My girlfriend's best friend has crones disease and she suggested that Sharon keep track of what she eats and drinks, what time of day it is and how she's sleeping and try to correlate that with bad tummy times.

It's hard to keep track though.

Is there a possibility that all three are caused by a single underlying problem?

Possibly. I'd be damn interested to find out, anyway.

I think we're on a panel together for Swancon, btw, if everything goes okay. Cause Tom asked me if I wanted to be on some and there were a couple of interesting panels that needed folks. I'll be children's booking and feministing, that should be fun. :)

You, by the way, look like you're going to be a VERY busy man on that weekend! :D

Yeah. Would you believe it's not quite half the maximum number of panels I've sat on during a single Swancon? Shameful, really.

Uhm, I haven't met with the other panelists yet so I'm not sure of the tack they'll be taking (I don't even know if I'm in for sure yet) but it'll be about Children's Lit with subversive adult content (hidden adult content).

Well I know that I asked to be on one panel with Dave and Grant, and I see Dave all the time and he's mates with Grant, so... yeah. But the ones I don't know, we'll probably wing it on the day.

tell your mom a gluten (wheat) free diet is not for IBS, but rather celiac disease. It won't make a difference if you only have IBS

yeah, celiac disease is more of a malabsorption disorder and it usually doesn't present after adolescence.

i have a couple of friends who have it and the one eats the same meal everyday - chicken breast and white rice. everyday. i feel horrible for him. lol not to mention he can't drink beer!

Luckily, I'm not overly attached to beer. I'm not a huge beer fan. But I can see how that would be a shitter to someone who DID like it.

One of my college friends has IBS and from what I've seen, it's a very odd balancing act of stress, diet and random factors that set off the tummy aches. Easily one of more unusual syndromes I've witnessed, just in trying to predict it.

Yeah, my Mom has to deal with that as well. She hasn't really gotten the tummy aches though. Stress does play a factor in attacks, though. I think that the diet's been fine, but I can't think of anything else that would set an attack off. She has lowered her dairy intake (doesn't drink much milk and cheese has to be eaten sparingly, anyway, due to the new sodium restrictions) and that's seemed to help her out quite a bit.

I. Must. Have. CHEESE!

There are things in life that make it worth living. Wine. Cheese. Chocolate. Sex.

I already don't drink wine anymore, and have cut right back on the chocolate. I don't get any sex, so cheese is all I have left!!!

Oh, it's not that she can't have cheese! It's the type of cheese that she eats because of the high sodium content in so many of them (the sodium restriction because of the heart bypass operation). She loves pizza and would cheerfully eat it 3 times a day every day. The restriction has been lifted somewhat, but we're keeping on with it because everybody feels so much better with it, but she is thrilled that she can have a slice of pizza once in a while.

Dannon makes a yogurt that's called Activia (we even found this in Germany while we were over there in September last year) and she's found that it's done a great job with settling her tummy - less gas, etc. It contains probiotics and is very tasty.

I've known a few people with IBS who improved somewhat after changing their diet. In terms of what to change, I have no clue! I think red meat and dairy may play some part.

My sister Kelly has IBS. She's on medication for it, but it doesn't work all the time. She has tons of stomach problems as well. She's currently doing this thing..
Dr. Ho's intestinal irrigation or some shit like that.. she says it's actually working, and it's got a 30 day money back thing.. If it works all 30 days I'll let you know.

If you don't already - take lots of probiotics!

For the past few months I've been having a Yakult a day and it's really helped with the constipation I used to get all the time. It may not cure stuff but it should help a bit, it certainly won't hurt.

I'm sorry you have IBS, Nancy! I do too, but I have the one with constipation, so I take Zelnorm. Still, sometimes, stress and espresso really do a number on me. Plus it caused an allergy to dairy, so sometimes dairy makes me sick (but not the way it does to lactose intolerant people). I feel for you! There's actually an IBS for Dummies book. I bought it, but I haven't looked through it yet. A lot of it has to do with certain foods causing certain reactions, I think, and certain times of day.

Hey Lisa! *hugs*. I don't know what 'kind' I have, all I know is that sometimes I'll go for a week without pooping, and then I'll not be able to stop for days, with cramping and what-not. And runs. Bad.

I'm not on medication for it at the moment. They had put me on an antidepressant, but I'm starting to think that's pointless since I'm on an SSRI anyway.

*hugs* back. Yeah, I'll go a long time without, and then I end up busting hemorroids when I do go. Lately, though, I've had the cramps, etc.

Zelnorm helps keep me regular, and I have to take fiber. It's loads of fun, but I do what I have to.

Hopefully you'll find out what's wrong soon, and they'll be able to help you. It sucks, but it's liveable.
