Based on my own experience, though, one frequent difference between men and women who are currently not employed outside the home is that the women are generally "housewives" (and hence running around after the kids, keeping the place clean and fixing meals) whereas the men are more likely "unemployed" (and hence doing a lot of playing computer games or TV-watching whilst ignoring housework or kids). We've got the cultural concept down of earning one's keep as the unemployed spouse, but there are a lot of people out there who are really quick to accept being outside the workforce and just coasting on their SO's earnings. (To be fair, my first stepmother was the same way --expecting to get away with neither working nor doing housework -- and my second became that way after quitting her job in a temper tantrum. But I've seen a lot more men pulling the unemployed couch potato routine.)
