Barrow Island under threat...
Jun. 21st, 2006 09:00 amAnd there really is very little that can be done at this stage that isn't being done by conservationists and so forth. But it's a terribly important issue as there are several endangered species, species unique to Barrow Island that are under threat, like the Flat-backed turtle for instance. I've been looking up some links about it:
http://www.energybulletin.net/5219.html A geoscience view on the project, and apparently it's not too wise...
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/buzz/stories/s1150469.htm Chevron's side of the argument...
http://www.terradaily.com/reports/Environment_Agency_Rejects_Gorgon_Natural_Gas_Project.html The WA Government ignore the EPA (That's the Labor govt for you...)
http://www.planetark.com/dailynewsstory.cfm/newsid/36664/story.htm Planet Ark's response on the matter.
What really ticks me off is that a lot of people supported Labor because they went on about how they'd protect the old growth forests and all that sort of clap-trap, but they've ignored that shit largely. It just shits me. The major parties are both as bad as each other! :(
I'd talk about this more but I have to go to Centrelink this morning. Gonna suck hard.

if people dont know what the government are doing, they dont think they are doing anything, so before these areas can be "saved", we have to know they are at risk. Ningaloo for instance, many people didn't know it existed until there was the protests about the resort they were trying to put there.
and south beach in freo... thhats a great example... developers look like they are moving in, the environmentalists protest, carmen laurence gets her arse on tv for something other than the penny easton beat up and she looks like the great saviour of south beach...
if it has heaps of publicity they are not going to do it, they jjust make it look like they are going to so they can "save" the environment....

Date: 2006-06-21 11:37 am (UTC)The turtles nesting habitats shouldn't be harmed, but since they're not endangered yet none of the companies will care - too little PR fallout. :( (Or did I wake up on the cynical side of the bed today?)
