Can PVS Workfind force my brother to shave his beard off? He doesn't want to. They can't make him do that can they?

A company/employer has the right to decide what is acceptable in regards to dress code/ personal appearance. It is the employee's right to decide whether to accept the position and subsequently the terms of employment. This employment agency might be offering practical advice which could increase your brother's employment opportunities. Your brother should find out whether it is an all or nothing term or if they are referring to the general tidiness of facial hair. He might just have to trim it up a bit.

He's such a pushover, though. I'm pretty sure they can't make him get rid of it entirely.

I daresay it's the same with girls and makeup. No employer can MAKE you do it - it is generally just a 'we would really really LIKE you to and we can make things hard for you if you don't'.
If there are other people there that have beards then he can pretty much tell them to shove it. As long as he keeps it neat there shouldn't be any reason for them to tell him to get lost.

Well, that's it. He can keep it neat, but they can't get him to get rid of it. He's with PVS Workfind, and has signed a looking for work agreement. If they find him a job he can take, he has to take it. But what if that employer requires him to shave? And he doesn't want to? He should be able to say, "No, I can't take that job." I mean, they can't make a shiek shave, can they?

Unless he is working in food preparation or someplace where it is a 'health risk' (aka, the Health Department don't like finding hair in their food) then they aren't allowed, by law. It would be like saying 'Shave you HEAD'.

Ah. There's the rub. They're trying to get him to work for Hungry Jacks. Shit. He shouldn't have to work there. I don't think they'd LET him work there. He's so hairy. His hairs are everywhere.

If he's working in food PREPARATION then he's kinda screwed but if he's on the front counter or something then it won't matter too much.

Well he could work at the front counter. If they make Scotty get rid of the beard, I'll be so pissed off. *sigh*

Though it'd be interesting since I haven't seen his chin in five years.

Well, if that group is a job search agency then he can say yes or no as he pleases. The jobs they provide him with need to suit not only the skills of the person but also their character. Centrelink can't cut off his dole because he won't shave his beard for a job. It is up to the people finding him work to find a job that will suit him (without Scotty being too picky of course ;)

yeah, absolutely. Also, if they find him work, and he goes there, and they say you have to shave or you can't work here, he's still got the choice of saying, I'm not shaving, and then they turn him down for the job. Just like if he got an interview, they wouldn't necessarially say "shave the beard off, and the jobs yours" but it could come down to that and he says he won't shave it off and gets turned down, so is still 'looking for work'

If PVS are acting as a jobsearch employer (or whatever it is) and he applies for a position that PVS workfind advertise and he puts it on his centrelink form, if Centrelink call PVS to confirm he did infact apply for the position, they can tell Centrelink that he did but he was not interested in it, and this interst can be based on his appearance.

it just depends on how much he needs the dole

He really needs it since he lives off it.

not totally correct though jakie. they would likely have 'applied but was not accepted' or 'applied but was inappropriate for the position', but could say 'wasn't interested in the position' if the person was feeling kinda bitchy that day

mmm.

but see PVS wouldn't call centrelink and say he isn't trying for the job. it is more likely if centre stick calls them

What the. Pushover?? What the fuck?

Awesome a thread about my facial hair!

No real need for the discussion though, I really don't care about the beard. I only brought it up to-day because I was trying (in a roundabout way) to cancel my movie! :D It's beyond a joke now. 378 days since we started shooting it and we've got fuck all done. Sooo, with four weeks till the school holidays are over and I can't use David whenever I want, then there's 3 weeks till PVS just pick any job and throw me at it. Then Tina's deathly ill and probably not that interested anyway. Fuck it all, it's becoming too stressful for me. I get chest pains at the best of times, I'm not going to fuck around with this shit anymore.

It was an immensely good idea, this movie, and it kills me to contemplate just not doing it. Especially after I wrote that oscar winning script, after I offered Dad a role and everything - the cockpit set was pretty neat too. But really, I can only see everyone waiting another year to make the fucker. It's kind of... (sheepish mode on) my life, this stuff. Movies and guitar. To other people, it's just something fun to do for five minutes on the weekend, but I live this shit! :D It's trivialising both my movie and myself to piss another year down my leg pretending I'm a movie-maker. Seriously lacking the inclination to bother anymore.

(Wow, I like the inclination line. I should write for Jack Nicholson).

Yeah. So that's the back story to this beard thing. Bahah.
