Particularly the womens' tabloids. I view it as an underhanded way of encouraging some values in women and discouraging others - usually the less empowered ones.
What I'm specifically bemused by is the way they've decided that Angelina Jolie is the big marriage-destroying slut of Hollywood. First they make up some crap about her causing trouble between Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffiths (Holy shit, I'd be wandering if my wife had a face like that, too. It was fine till she started inflating her lip to twenty pounds). Then I read that they're also blaming her for Brad Pitt and Jennifer Anniston breaking up.
Hmm, let's look at this. They criticise Jolie, who:
- Is currently and very happily single.
- Is a rampant sex symbol amongst both men and women
- Is vocal about problems in the third world
But, they regularly and happily report on:
- High profile couples
- High profile marriages
- The expensive and ostentatious outfits they wear
Jolie obviously doesn't really fit that mold. She's an empowered single woman who doesn't need a partner for the moment. And of course, she's breaking up all these wonderful (?!) marriages by merely doing her job and existing. Heavens forbid that a woman be proud of her sexuality, use it in her job, yet remain officially unattached and still have her own family. Oh, and she's openly bisexual. I'm sure they hate that too.

Date: 2005-01-10 01:24 pm (UTC)- Is currently and very happily single. = bad thing for you to be at their age (or so society has taught us)
- Is a rampant sex symbol amongst both men and women = older women think anyone who is slightly sexual is slutty/a threat to their own marriage (altho most marriages fall apart cos the wife is bitch rather than ugly)
- Is vocal about problems in the third world = they dont care about other people. Gernerally they spent thier life caring for other people, kids, husband family etc. theyve had enough.
But this stuff is the stuff they dream of, but also what they can bitch about other people having (ie jealousy)
- High profile couples
- High profile marriages
- The expensive and ostentatious outfits they wear
dont take it out on them too harshly, its what theyve been taught to do. *kicks psychology of the world*
The funniest thing is that almost all reporting happens the same way, they go with public opinion rather than solid fact.
(all generally/in my experience, in case there are any journalists about to yell at me ^_^)

Date: 2005-01-11 01:54 pm (UTC)best idea is find someone who was there, which i know isnt usually possible, im just really jaded about reporting. You remeber tyhat whole toxic waste barrel incident a while back down south? mums boyfriend is the guy who had to oversee it, and was there watching the reporter take notes for all of _half a minute_ and interview noone.
we read the article when it came out: didnt even have the correct town in it O_o an also had a random interview with some greenie, rather than anyone actually involved in the dig.
I only watch news for the fictional content anymore.. I think im getting more cynical.
