It's the sort of franchise where, after having characters like Uhura, Kheyler, Captain Janeway, Beverly FUCKING Crusher, that this sort of thing was left in the 60s with Gene's little habit of sleeping with every actress that came into the door for an audition. I wish I was kidding. I really wish I was, but these are specifically being sold as "Spring Break" t-shirts. One of them reads "Orion Slave Girls Gone Wild."
That's right. Slave Girls. FUCKING SLAVE GIRLS, YO. So not only are they making light of enslaving an unwilling woman into being an object of desire, they're framing it in the 21st Century corporatised Rape epidemic that is Girls Gone Wild.
And this is Star Trek. Supposedly inclusive. Supposedly forward thinking. This is supposed to be the show where in the future, anyone can be whatever they want to be, everyone has a chance, everyone can search the stars for adventure. It's why I watched it when I was a child. It's why I remained a fervent fan throughout years and years. Why I bought a buttload of merchandise. Star Trek was my first fandom, it was the first thing I wrote fan-fiction for. It was the optimistic future I was living to achieve by being a good and progressive person TODAY.
And they give us this? THIS IS NOT OKAY. I am going to do what I can to get these products pulled because this is NOT the Star Trek we should be supporting. IT IS NOT.
