Fun day swimming!
Dec. 18th, 2009 03:51 pmAH! The first swim of the summer!! I went to the local swimming pool with my nieces today. New thing they're doing at the pool - leaving flippers out for people to use, made of dense foam-rubber. I wasn't sure if they were available for everyone to use, so I snuck a go. I was using them as if they were a mono-fin. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. The stuff I'd read on the net about monofins made out like swimming in them is really hard. But maybe it's different when you have two flippers on.
I was swimming like they were one flipper anyway. Was FUCKING WICKED. I was powering through the water! My dolphin swimming has never been so effective and efficient! It was exhilirating to dip down and churn through that water! I've never been so fast in the water before! Legs are a waste of fucking time, all that stupid kicking - one-fin is the way to GO!
I have never, EVER, been a good swimmer. Ever. I struggle in the water, I can't relax, I'm afraid of sinking, I can't get the rhythm of the strokes right or remember what I'm supposed to be doing with all the different parts of my body - it's like dancing. I'm shit.
But with the fins on and doing the dolphin swimming style? It felt so *natural*. My body just found its groove after trying it for about an hour. At first it was hard, I'd kinda fuck up, but then it got to the point where I found the power of the stroke. Head down, roll body, kick! Head down, roll body, KICK! And my body just surges forward in these rolling waves - I feel like a fish!
I hate that I have to stop to breathe! LOL!
What I really, really want to do is get fins for the beach. I can't do the mono-fin at the beach cause I need to be able to walk in the water. But having the fins and my extra-fucking NICE snorkel kit that I bought myself?
IT IS GOING TO BE SO COOL.
Combine that with the underwater housing I bought for our camera!! THERE SHALL BE FISHES IN PICTURES.
I'm just really excited that I found a way to swim in the water that doesn't leave me tired and frustrated. The fins make ALL the difference, and I got so much swimming done! Plus the dolphin swimming style just uses all the muscles, from neck, shoulder, back, abdomen, hips, buttocks, calves - the whole lot.
I look forward to swimming like that in the sea. With the real fishes! :D :D :D Then I'll be a REAL mermaid!
