I'm a dork...

When I watch episodes of Bob Ross' "The Joy of Painting", I get sad when he invites the viewer to come to demonstrations in "your area" to meet him. He's so friendly, he says, "I'd love to meet you and see your paintings" and I think, I'll never get to talk to him, cause he's dead.

And even though I don't really use his exact technique, and I'm a portrait painter, and I work in acrylic, I still get so much out of watching him paint. I wish I could tell him that. Watching him invite the viewer reminds me that I can't, and it's sad, cause he seemed like the kind of guy that would get a kick out of hearing about how he's helped you.

Maybe I'll have to send my thoughts into the aether instead. You've helped me, Bob, just by being enthusiastic. And reminding me why we paint in the first place - cause we love it.

Every time I think of Bob Ross, or hear his voice, I'm transported to my grandmother's living room on lazy summer days, sitting on the floor, making a corral for my horses out her or my grandfather's foot stool and a jump rope. My grandfather would be sitting, smoking his cigarettes or working his chewing tobacco, waiting for the baseball game to start but wisely letting my grandmother finish watching her show before changing the channel. The show would end and my grandmother would go into the next room and try to recreate what he had been painting that day.

I am less familiar with Bob Ross (Yes, I know, bad former art student. I just never watched him. I mean, I know who he is and so on, just never watched.) but I can kind of relate to how you feel about a couple of other famous personalities.
