So, Hosni Mubarak makes probably the most offensive speech one could imagine to the Egyptian people. He frames the protesters and organisers as criminals, promises that they'll punish them, and then, THEN, says that he'll leave office at the end of his term, an that he will "Die in Egypt".

Then, after this heinous fucking speech, STATE TV RUNS A SENTIMENTAL MONTAGE ABOUT HIM. OH MY GOD.

The anger and disgust and rage I feel is unfathomable, so I cannot imagine how the Egyptian People must feel. Yet they remain peaceful for now. God protect them!

He is basically outlining why everyone wants him gone. *sigh* I got interested in Egypt a few years ago when a former classmate of mine from college got kidnapped by secret police and I was a little shocked once I found out how common that is there. The West have made them out to be an ally all these years so I had just assumed it was one of the saner, more prosperous countries in the region but in reality they get away with a lot because of a few key West-friendly political stances they take like towards Palestine.

I've been so busy studying Egyptian politics from 2000-5000 years ago that I feel like a tool that I didn't know what was going on today. For all my statues and painted papyrii, and I didn't know how bad it was over there. I know now, though, and I am reading up on it. Thanks for the links.
