Dear Julian Assange's Lawyer Whose Name I Can't Find Right Now,
There are a good list of things that the ANZACs died for, "Face down in the mud" as you so eloquently put it. I shall list them for you:
- Freedoms as described in the Australian Constitution
- The human rights of their fellow Australians, and those under threat by the foes they fought against
- Safety and security of civillians
- The good of the world at large
Notice that in that list there was no mention of likely rapists NOT getting thrown in jail for violating women's bodily autonomy. Funny, that.
Here, for future reference, is a list of things NOT to bring up as mendacious hyperbole, thereby making a mockery of your defence:
- Nazi Germany
- Comparing anything that isn't rape to rape
- Calling anything that isn't a war a war
- Paralleling any oppressions that people in the world may face that your client patently DOESN'T
I'm sure if you thought hard enough, there'd be a lot of clever things you could say on your client's behalf. Conflating him with the entirety of Wikileaks, and conflating the efforts of authorities to bring the matter of Assange's probably crimes to justice with the downright barbaric cries for the physical harm of anyone connected with Wikileaks, is a weasel move and won't help anyone. At all.
Though, if Julian Assange had any sense of true concern for the world, he'd disassociate himself from Wikileaks while he was in court and let the group go on without him.
But then it wouldn't be about HIM anymore, would it?
I loathe you and your asshole client.
No love,
Napalm Nacey.

Date: 2010-12-10 07:12 am (UTC)I've been flat out this week and not keeping up and now when I search I'm just getting pages and pages worth of "He's evil!" "He's been framed!" "He should be shot!" "It's a CIA CoverupPlotFrame!" and nothing of any real info value.
Aaaand I just thought to look at Hoydenabouttown and found some stuff so that's good.
Any other links appreciated if you have them to hand, otherwise no stress.
I was planning on spending some time this weekend catching up on what I'd missed.

Date: 2010-12-10 10:25 am (UTC)It's funny, you know, I mean, I totally support Wikileaks and think it's a really important foundation. I think the threatening the lives of Assange and those on staff is not okay, and I'm very cynical about them jumping on the rape bandwagon just to get their hands on Assange. It's frustrating and insulting for those who weren't raped by a wanted man.
That said, clearly, if Assange DID rape those women (and the statistics on this sort of thing are in favour of the women accusing him) then the best thing is for him to face justice.
Some people don't realise you can believe all those things simultaneously.
