I'm incredibly disappointed by this bullshit. It's insane. I mean, what kind of person makes a joke like that? It's shades of G W Bush and his "No WMD's here!" gag.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. >:[ He'll placate people, promise them things, but clearly it's the same old shit.

It's an unavoidable symptom of being in the US political system: the day you're elected, you need to start fund-raising every day to have a hope of being re-elected in four years' time.

I understand people's offence and frustration, but even being as disappointing as he has been, Obama would have to go a long way to become even close to "same as the old boss".

Honestly speaking as a GLBT person? Having someone promise that they're different, and then go and make a joke about your lack of rights? It stings like a bitch, and probably hurts more than being entirely ignored.

It is very upsetting. Australia takes a lot of its cues from the US, and I was hoping that things would be a little more progressive over there, and inspire a little change here. What was I thinking? That optimism bites me in the ass again!

I'm trying to defend his comment, sorry if it came across that way. It's just that after eight years of the worst leader in the history of the developed world who did so much direct damage to the lives of *billions* of people, I find it hard to be 100% cynical about his replacement.

Oh, it didn't come across that way. I was just trying to tell you how it felt to hear that as a GLBT person. Cause it might not be immediately apparent if it's not something you have to worry about (and I'm so glad that most people don't have to worry about it).

I know, realistically, he'll never be as bad as Bush. But he is a disappointment. He could have done something about DADT by now, even if it's just saying, "Hey, I've heard what you guys have to say about that and I don't think it's something we're going to keep supporting, we're looking into it", which is what he promised during his campaign. He has the ability to do something, I don't see a reason not to let people know they've been heard.

I know. I'm highly skeptical of most politicians but I got a bit carried away with Obama. I was really hopeful he would be different. He's a little different, but not enough.

Very true. Damn my constant hyperbole.

I should probably say "in my lifetime" or somesuch, just to take out Hitler at least, I suppose. : )

I am perfectly content to describe GWB as "worst President in the history of the USA", however, as well as "single figure responsible for the greatest damage to America's image overseas", and possibly even "person most responsible for unrest and violence in the Middle East within living memory".

Politics is about choosing the lesser evil. 'No evil at all' is not on the menu. You just get to choose the one that sucks less. Obama sucks a LOT less than Bush, but he still really sucks.

Before Obama took office, I said I was really looking forward to being disappointed by Obama. Because it would be so nice to just be really disappointed for a change, instead of stunned into unbelieving outrage.

This got a bit long, and a bit random. Enjoy!

I had a problem with Il Presidente because he spent so much time on his buzzwords, and it took a damn long time until he started saying something a bit more structural than "Hope", "Change" and "Having the courage to hope for change". Bullshit, anyone can hope for change, structuring out what changes you want, how you're gonna get it and stick to it, that requires courage and inner strength.

If Il Presidente wants to help bring America about as the great heralded example of democracy, he's got to do better than belong to a less priviliged demographic of his country while holding the Presidential office. GM has been a big thing for him to work with lately, except for the part that he anyway only did so much and it's heading to bankruptcy anyway. But it's one thing if he hasn't gotten around to the LBGT issue, one that in Sweden during one of our few relatively conservative rulings has been resolved so that we since May 1st have genderneutral marriage act in action, but another thing entirely to joke about a promise he made. It's been less than 8 months since he got elected, what kind of memore does he have?

One of the republican candidates, Ron Paul who got such a huge internet following, a self spoken conservative spoke about same sex marriage said that he to his opinion didn't like it, but that there is no reason that it shouldn't be legal in the US, greatest democracy in the world. Hopey McChangepants however chooses to pretend that it's no big deal that he promised to give hope to LBGT-people that there would be a change in the unfair marriage laws, which he happened to forget about upon becoming president.

Man, I don't know if I should be happy that I live in an actual democracy full with a genderneutral marriage act and Principe of Publicity, or rue that a country I actually happen to love has been turning itself ugly to me for so long. "You used to be cool!! Where are your cowboyninjas with freaking lasers of democracy and free enterprise now? No way like the American way!" That's my new slogan, "the American way is no way like the American way." Which doesn't make sense, but neither does politics.

Nope. Not surprised at this, not at all.

Mr. Hopey McChangepants has been all talk and no action from Day One, aka Deval Patrick, Version 2.0. Plus, the dude still thinks that he's on the damned campaign trail. *sighs*

Yes, I voted for him. Doesn't mean that I *liked* the choices that I had.

Well, I mean, you know, Obama can't really get rid of DADT because the military likes that policy, and if he goes against the military then, I don't know, bad things happen? They won't fight as hard or they'll have a coup or something if they have to accept open GLBT people? Uhhh...uhhhh...shit, uhhh...and I don't think he was for gay marriage, and that he supported that civil union stuff all along, but GLBT supporters thought he was going to repeal DOMA. Yeah.

Okay, someone wanna edit everything I wrote there to make it sound coherent? I was just writing my exact thought process.

I'm not exact on when he said it, but apparently he did say that he was going to repeal DADT. I don't think the army would have a problem with gay people, especially considering the shortage of people joining and the fact that a huge chunk of their foreign language experts are gay. It's not just happy fuzzy love muffin stuff, keeping the gay officers on board. They're healthy, valuable officers. Good ones that are being rejected when the armed forces are suffering a downturn in applicants. It's very stupid of the President not to do something about this. Especially in the scary climate of the world today.

I'm currently having what I like to refer to as a 'crisis of political faith'. I used to be a die hard Democrat, but I've been finding the Democratic party to be just as bad as the Republican party for, well, basically the same reasons for quite some time. Both parties are close-minded, self-servicing, deceitful, dishonest, and in many cases too moderate AND extreme with no clear-cut ground. What I mean is, basically, some Republican and Democrat senators/congresspeople/mayors/governors/etc are interchangeable in their beliefs, despite belong to one party or another. The rest seem to be so extremely 'left' or so extremely 'right' that they basically meet.

The U.S. has a history of revamping its political parties every 50-75 years. There's been an absolutely alarmingly long delay since the Republican and Democratic party flipped (Democrats used to be the right-wingers and Republicans were the left-winters). In fact, it's been over 100 years. Time for a change indeed. We need new parties, or a reorganisation of parties.

And Obama needs to stop appeasing everyone. He's beginning to remind me of Neville Chamberlain. *shudder* He loves quoting Abraham Lincoln, so maybe his should remember his hero's attributed quote: “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
