Nah. I did the idea that Jesus and Santa are laughing it up. And Jesus looks sweet in the Santa hat!

Now, I'm a pastor, so that should count for something, but I'm a bleeding-heart, liberal, reconciling, tolerant-of-other-faiths passtor, so maybe it doesn't count for much.

And here's my "consider the penguin" sermon. I figure God has a sense of humor. Clearly Jesus must have-- look at the load of idiots he walked around with all the time! He was always making up stories to try to confuse them. Rather perverse, actually. He takes on these disciples and then spends the next few years messing with their minds.

But creator-god? Now there's a being with a sense of humor. Consider the penguin (my favorite animal, and mostly for this reason). It's just so ridiculous. What an odd flightless bird, with a silly walk that would make John Clease jealous, and a snazzy tuxedo to boot. With strange gentleness and love too, all those dads huddled together or whatever. Now any entity that made oversaw the evolution of that strange a creature must also have tremendous humor and tolerance for, say, me, and my many ridiculous, strange, loving ways.

So humor and divinity are most definitely compatible. For this reason, I find Lamb by Christopher Moore to be simultaneously the most funny, crass, and faithfully moving de4piction of Jesus in a long time.

I haven't read it but it sounds like something I'd like to read! I love reading/watching things where faith is approached from a different angle. Like "Stigmata" with Patricia Arquette. Terrible movie in some ways but it was my first exposure to the apocryphal Gospels of St. John.
