I hope it's who I think it is (Bird Talk)
Jun. 3rd, 2011 02:14 pmToday, while breaking up a fight between Lenny and the neighbour's cat, I saw a young female magpie hanging out with Romana (the first baby bird of the dominant magpie group in our yard that we monitored). Sarah Jane used to hang out with Romana constantly, but then she went missing. But today I saw a juvenile bird with Romana, a little older than Sarah Jane used to be, but in a stressed looking state. A lot of her flying feathers were missing, but she seemed to be fairly well nutritioned. Both Romana and the other bird show signs of stress, but they seem to be getting fed all right.
I'm wondering if it is Sarah Jane, cowed and traumatised by months of bullying from the dominant magpie group on my property? I hear them fight a lot. I've also thought I heard Sarah Jane's distinct little baby cry from my neighbour's yard. Maybe I'm being a tad too optimistic, but it's only been since Elisabeth Sladen died (weird, I know) that Sarah Jane Magpie went missing.
I probably love these birds more than is normal. What can I say? They're incredible little creatures.
