A silly thing.
Apr. 1st, 2009 03:17 pmI was just watching a clip of Nichelle Nichols as Uhura singing "Beyond Antares" on Star Trek. It reminded me of when I was a kid and I'd watch Star Trek after school. If I played Star Trek at school with the kids in the playground, I always insisted that I got to be Uhura. Never the pretty girls that Kirk boffed. Uhura.
There's a sci-fi convention coming up here in Perth in a week and a half (SwanCon) and they're having a fancy dress ball. I wanted to go as a Starfleet officer from the original series. I've settled on a character from the animated series, cause painting yourself up like a cat is far more acceptable than painting yourself up like an African American.
There is just no way I can dress up as Uhura and not have it be offensive in some way. Yet there's a little girl inside of me that wants to be *just* like her. But I respect the character far too much to ever do anything of the sort. I might wear the red dress though. It's just too cool.
