Nowt like t' Good Awd Days...
Dec. 4th, 2006 03:18 amWatch out people - I'm reaching back to my roots. It's scary.
I used to be heavily, HEAVILY involved in fandom. You think I have my fingers in a lot of pies now? That's nothing compared to my activities in the late nineties. I ran so many pages, I don't even remember them all. I wasn't particularly GOOD at running pages, but I got a lot of people involved in stuff.
In Xena fandom, I was the pushy Joxer fan that angled for equal treatment. In a sea of people gunning for gay rights, I might have been a little insensitive. But to me, it was just TV. I didn't see how XG subtext had anything to do with how I felt about the rights of gays and lesbians. Joxer fans were treated lower than dirt and, desperate for ratings, the Powers that Be did some crazy shit in season 6 to keep viewers. Opinions vary on how the quality of the episodes from the 25 Year Jump onwards.
I fought for my fen to be involved in the larger fandom. I held Joxer Nights on Palace Chat, I wrote essays (embarrassingly bad ones) for Whoosh, I did the best artwork I could, I even went to a couple of cons (when I should have been spending that money on my music career, silly bitch!).
I find myself, these days, wanting to hang with Xena fen again. But the problem is - the fandom has changed dramatically. Numbers of fans have dwindled and we simply don't have the luxury to shun people anymore. I go over to the Xenite Online Community at ezboard and I delight in having a reasonable, calm conversation about the show with people, even if the opinions differ. I've met new Joxer fans (FiremanD and RoyalJess) and the new Xena comic has a little bit of something for everybody - and a HELLUVA lot of Joxer!
It's not the same, though. I guess I miss the numbers and the areas unknown. Funny thing is, things are better for a Joxer fan now, in some areas. Some? Same old.
Anyway, it's heading for 3:30, I have no idea why I'm still awake. I think coming off the codeine is giving me stupid moodswings. Love you all.
