Top Spooky Games for your Halloween!

For the past week I've been playing some pretty damned spooky online games! Here's a list of those that I particularly enjoyed.

Exmortis & Exmortis 2: I really like this title. It's original, spooky, apocalyptic, intriguing, and full of awesome twists. It's made by an Australian so if a slight cultural cringe at creepy Aussie twangs is a problem for you, get ready for some giggles. But other than that, it's a rich, cleverly plotted puzzle/novel game. I played it with the walkthrough made by Ben himself (the guy that made the series) and it actually added to the experience, which was odd. I've never had a walkthrough do that before! :D I think this guy needs to write it into a novel, and have it made into a movie. The storyline is quite unique and original, which I didn't think was possible in horror anymore!

The Dead Case: Not so much scary as spooky and eerie. You are a ghost and you have to find out not only how you died, but the ghosts you meet as you drift through the small town you lived in! It has a built-in help system that tips you without telling you exactly what to do. Another 'point & click' game (I like those) that is atmospheric and good fun.

The House: Purely a virtual 'haunted house' game. There isn't a plot to speak of and there isn't much to do but to repeatedly click things. The point of this game is to play it in a dark room and wait for it to make you jump in fright. Which is fun if you're with little kids and stuff. As a result of this it's only a one-play game. After that it's pointless. But I enjoyed the graphics and the atmosphere of the game.

They're the best I've found in the week. If you have any games that you enjoy that are spooky, feel free to leave a comment about it!

I will ALWAYS have a soft spot for Maniac Mansion. The game was released in the late 1980s and it should be easy to find a copy online, be it a fan revamp, the NES ROM, or the original run using SCUMMVM. Given that it was LucasArts' first adventure game, the plot isn't that deep and the characters aren't that fleshed out, but there's some niftiness in that it starts out as a horror game and slowly twists into a science fiction plot as you uncover more and more of what's really going on with the Edison family.

If you're willing to ignore the lack of straight horror, I strongly suggest playing the follow-up, Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, which takes place five years later. It's really more of a science fiction game (mostly based around time travel), but it's seriously one of the greatest adventure games ever made. If I talk about it, I'll spoil the plot, but it's a decent game even as a standalone. :D

I've heard a lot of good things about Maniac Mansion! One of my favourite old-school spooky comp games was "Scarabeus" which you were going through this Egyptian tomb in search of - something, I'm not sure once. It had creepy music and running into the ghosts there usually scared the ever-loving SHIT out of me.

Maniac Mansion is a great little game, once you get past that you can kill off your characters. I know it bothers some people that you can kill one of the kids and make the game unbeatable (it also won't tell you that the storyline is unfinishable), however I felt it made the game more horror movie like. Day of the Tentacle doesn't have this problem at all - you can't kill any of the characters and you'll always be able to complete the game. The big difference is that Maniac Mansion can be finished in 30 minutes or so (depending on which of the 4 or so storylines you follow), while Day of the Tentacle takes several hours to complete.

And speaking of more Egyptian themed games, if you're looking for something more along those lines, I strongly suggest looking for a slightly illegal copy of Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, another old LucasArts game. The game is based upon the new age movements that were popular in the 1980s. You play a tabloid reporter named Zak who is haunted by a series of strange dreams and his related adventures uncover the "truth" about the Egyptian pyramids, Stonehenge and... Elvis, of all things. It's not overly spooky (it's mostly a comedy), but I found parts to be a little unsettling later into game. And then, there's always the Monkey Island games, which have pirates, ghosts and zombies.
