No, Jolie, no.

Apparently, they want to cast Angelina Jolie as Cleopatra in an upcoming movie.

Now, Cleopatra's race is a complicated issue. She was Greek, Macedonian specifically, and horribly inbred. Apparently, she wasn't that much of a looker, either. Not by modern standards at least (I think she was still lovely).

So why pick Jolie? Sure, Jolie might have the right amount of quiet psychosis required to pull off Cleopatra, but she's far too pretty and overexposed to be believed as the most famous Egyptian Queen ever to have ruled Egypt.

I mean, they wouldn't *gasp* get an actual mixed-race woman, of mainly Macedonian heritage to play her, would they? That would be unheard of. *grumps*

This is so random, but your post made me think of it:

The one character consistently cast as 'ethnic' when she wasn't seems to be Katherine of Aragon. They consistently (overall, at least; there are exceptions with someone depicted so many times of course) find typically Spanish-looking actresses to play her, when she was actually blonde and fair.

Edit: By 'typically Spanish' I should say 'dark'; because certain regions actually do tend towards light hair and skin more.

I thought she was a redhead.

But at any rate, I've noticed that, too! The woman who plays her in The Tudors (I forget her name) almost looks Arab to me.

I thought blonde, but you saying red triggered something, so I looked it up and found a description of her with hair 'between reddish blonde and auburn' or 'golden auburn'. So we're apparently both kind of right. XD But either way, not the typical dark Spaniard looks they often portray her with.

Maria Doyle Kennedy. Irish as the name suggests. How's that for messing up conceptions? XD She really kind of doesn't look it.

HAHAHA. Well...yeah I guess that was messing up conceptions. And no, she doesn't look it. And of course the hair and make up, which have NOTHING to do with how she ACTUALLY looks, contributed towards it.

I always remembered thinking she looked like a redhead, and then I was doing research on queens of Spain with red hair (long story), and I found her. I mean she wasn't a queen of Spain, but she was a princess and her mother was. :3

Who else had red hair from Spain? I'm all curious now.

I couldn't find anyone else! I mean I KNOW there are more because I've read about it before, but the names all escaped me. But if you google "red hair", "queen", and "spain", you get an article about Elizabeth I and the Spanish Armada. BUT I PROMISE THERE ARE MORE and when I find names, I will provide.

(SO annoying that I can remember enough of something to have my interest piqued but not enough to know what the hell I'm talking about!)

There was Isabel herself, I know. Besides that, I'm not sure, either.

Funny, I was just typing up another comment saying that same thing. And beyond that, I have no idea.
