Fuck you, PC Authority.

PC Authority magazine, an Australian publication (don't know if they have it in the states) has the following headline:

- HP's Stylish Mini 1001TU: The netbook your girlfriend WILL steal.

Okay. Let's break this down point by point, shall we?

* The main posit of this sentence is that it takes 'shiny' to make a woman interested in computing. Never mind the hundreds of thousands of women publishing blogs, using social networking software, taking part in creative pursuits on the internets. "Never mind the fact that I, myself, would love any laptop that can vibrate."(Scotty added to my sentence. He's partly right. I'd love a vibrator that you can hook into... hey, those exist! Anyway...) Never mind the fact that I, myself, would love any laptop that can run my favourite games, applications (Photoshop, Painter, music software, video editing software), has a decent display and is light and highly portable. I am batshit about keyboards. And I have a vagina. So no, I don't need a pretty paint job or shiny keys to use the fuckers, thank you.

* The presumption that only men read the magazine. Uhm... it's my MUM'S SUBSCRIPTION! She built the computer I am currently on! And the one in my room! She knows more about computers than anyone in my house.

* The idea that the girlfriend would steal YOUR laptop, and not, say, buy her own? Or that she'd lack a laptop that she'd need to steal yours?

It's a little thing, piffling really. But when you get little messages like that, day in day out, little things that tell you you're not supposed to be in the club (GIRLS use COMPUTERS!? WTF?!), it gets to you after a while. Makes me want to punch a fucker, that's for sure.

what a bunch of crap, dont they know about all the women that died so other women can do stuff that by rights they should be allowed to do anyway....

I am male and proud to say women should be treated equally, then some moron does this, it's not on. :(

btw Geeky women = ultra hot :)

Guys who make a valid point and then undermine it with a final comment = totally sexy.

:)

They also assume that their typical reader (who, face it, is probably—on average—a hopeless teenage geekboy) has a girlfriend to steal it. Maybe they should've said "little sister" instead, with a picture of an eight-year-old girl carrying it off. I suspect that would be less offensive to grown-up women, but it would still convey the idea they're going for.

I couldn't agree with this more. :/

You're absolutely right. Tell THEM that. Via email.

Get all your friends to write in and complain;sometimes it does work.See if you can find the address of the owners of the mag and write to them too. That sucked.

haha yeah, true, although i was trying to make the point with the last line that women who are smart are totally awesome, cos i like to have intelligent conversations (although i think the intelligence would be one sided....)

but i failed..... was trying to be kinda smart.

[identity profile] logansrogue.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I did!!

[identity profile] logansrogue.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good idea actually...

I suggest you soothe yourself by reading up on "Teledildonics," the science whose very name is a big, goofy snerk waiting to happen.

As long as you were aware your final comment made you come off just as bad, if not worse than the guys in the magazine.

Girls aren't geeky just so you can find them attractive. :)

[identity profile] logansrogue.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 11:29 am (UTC)(link)
We're geeky because we enjoy the smug sense of superiority that comes with being fucking smart.

(I kid. I'm not really super smart at all.)

*giggles*

[identity profile] apolla.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 11:43 am (UTC)(link)
I thought you would - good! I'm so sick of the bigotry that lurks just underneath everything (and sometimes right on top) and people just accept it because it's the way thngs are.

Grr. When I write my superhero story, it's gonna be equal rights for all.

In Soviet Russia, Computer Uses You.

I totally need the sexy, so... does "I believe in equality for bitches." work?

[identity profile] ausizoro.livejournal.com 2009-03-15 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i know, sorry.

Not when a man says it.
