So I'm sitting here playing Spore, and then it minimises and I panic thinking that the game has crashed and hours of hard work have gone down'a'tha'tooobe.

But no.  It's just Nancy's Semagic coming up to tell me that it's someone's birthday soon.
I wish you the happiest birthday and the very best supplementary, but Semagic wins no favours by doing this.  I very nearly peed my pants.
