If you're taking codeine for headaches, I think that the reason why you felt so down without it, is because it is supposed to happen this way in cases that deal with head stuff. Sedatives are agents that decrease the level of a body function or nerve activity, so if you took it (codeine) for a rather long time now, it is natural to feel a little down, considering the above described purpose of the medicine.
Furthermore, it is recommended that you do not stop taking it all of a sudden if you've been taking it more than 5-7 days in a row. It is recommended that you ask a doctor about how to proceed with reducing the dose.
I hope the pain doesn't come back and that you feel as good as possible soon.
